M sushi is very good. I had the Grand Omakase and the seared scallop, the black cod and the Wagyu beef were excellent. I really enjoyed the mackerel nigiri as well.atmosphere is a bit loud with many people ordering a “choose your own adventure” Sushi/ Maki dinner which makes for a very busy atmosphere. I’ll definitely come back. Oh, and the Matcha Basque Cheesecake is delicious.

This is a hidden little spot for sure. If you are trying to find it look down the alley by the Durham Hotel. The sign for the restaurant is not too big, so it can be easily missed.
Food for the price was ok I am a sushi critic and this was good but not something i would say really order again.
The ambience was a vibe. I would recommend getting a reservation. They do have very limited seating.
Parking garage is about less than one block away. On the weekends, I guess after a certain time is free because we were able to get out of the deck without paying.

M Sushi Durham is a true culinary delight. From the moment I walked through the doors, I could tell I was in for something special. The 13-piece nigiri omakase, priced at $75, is an exceptional value considering the quality and care that go into each piece. While the selection didn’t include botan ebi, ikura, or uni, every slice of fish that was presented was remarkably fresh and thoughtfully balanced with perfectly seasoned, warm rice. The restraint and precision in the preparation show real confidence in the ingredients.
If there’s one critique, it’s the restaurant’s fondness for the utilization of fried green onions and shallots on its nigiri. A touch less of those, and a return to the clean simplicity of soy sauce or sea salt, would allow the natural flavor of the fish to shine even more and provide an even more elevated omakase experience.
Our chef, though not Japanese, displayed impressive skill and composure throughout the meal. Each bite was carefully assembled, and the pacing of the omakase was perfectly measured. Compared to M Sushi Cary, the Durham location is clearly superior; the fish is fresher, the rice better executed, and the overall attention to detail far more consistent.
The man that served us was busy, yet warm and knowledgeable, striking that rare balance between professionalism and genuine hospitality. He even asked me about why I loved this restaurant so much. It shows how much they value feedback.
One note for future diners: if you are fortunate enough to sit at the sushi bar, please do not order rolls or edamame. The sushi bar is not the place for casual snacking or hiding rice under layers of sauce and avocado. It’s a space meant for appreciation, for watching craftsmanship unfold piece by piece. Ordering rolls there is the culinary equivalent of asking for ketchup at a fine steakhouse. Don’t do it. Honor the experience, honor the sushi chef; let the chef’s vast experience and knowledge of the ingredients and culinary art guide you.
M Sushi Durham is easily among the best sushi restaurants in the Triangle, and I will absolutely return, especially for that exceptional nigiri omakase.

M Sushi is an incredible, fresh, and professionally delicious sushi establishment tucked away in Durham. On a busy night, I was lucky to find a seat at the bar. I then decided I would get the Grand Chef Omakase to get a full tasting menu to see everything the establishment had to offer. Every single dish I was presented with for the 7 course experience was incredibly beautiful and visually stunning, with the quality of food and taste going even further. It was all so fresh and cut or cooked to perfection. I had the privilege of sitting at the sushi bar as well, so I was able to watch the absolute masters put together these masterpieces. If you can ever experience the Grand Chef Omakase, it is very expensive, but worth it. This establishment makes art and it is spectacular.

It doesn’t get much better than this. The thing that looks like cake in the pictures is actually their “tamago” (egg) sashimi. Carefully folded many times it is such a light and fluffy omelette you could easily mistake it for a cake. Every bite was high quality.

My 2 friends and I did the grand omakase. We had a reservation but did not have to ask for the grand omakase beforehand. It is not like a typical “omakase” where you are in a separate seating area with a dedicated sushi chef, but we still felt attended to while sitting at the bar. The whole course was delicious and so satisfying! We sat at the bar which was nice as the sushi chefs served us directly and explained each dish to us. Our waiter, Chad, was also very accommodating and helpful in explaining the dishes. The atmosphere is cool, located in a dimly lit “basement” right next to the Durham Hotel. FYI there is a cobblestone walkway leading up to the restaurant entrance (be mindful if you are in heels). Though pricey, I would definitely do this again with some sushi-loving friends!

This is my absolutely favorite sushi place! I’ve been here so many times already, never disappointed. Sushi, rolls, small plates – all is super delicious. Book a table in advance especially for the weekend visit. And it takes a while to find parking.

Got the nigiri omakase, great value for 13 nigiri, a hand roll, and tamago. The star was the seared garlic aoli salmon. Oh my god. I never understood how good smoked salmon could be, but it is an experience and I couldn’t get enough! Just by placing it on your tastebuds it’s worth every penny. Crunchy, tangy, and fresh all in one bite.
Service is exceptional and the atmosphere is cozy. Reservation is basically required.

I’ve eaten a lot of sushi and Japanese food in general, and this is among the best. The fish is incredibly fresh, and they combine flavors and textures very well, with simple but elegant presentation. The Grand Omakase was amazing start to finish! Service was very good, with a hiccup or two towards the end. Bar seating is really fun!
