〇Baingan Bharta ($17.5)
✨Review✨
This is an Indian restaurant with vegan options. It has a very fancy atmosphere and is such a lovely place.✨
For a starter, I had Papdi Chaat, and the flavors of beans and spices were amazing. The Baingan Bharta felt like a richly spiced vegetable stew, and I enjoyed it with rice. The tomato flavor was bold and absolutely delicious.
The V mark does not mean the dish is originally vegan. It means it can be made vegan, so make sure to let them know! ☝️
In the heart of town lies East India Trading Company, an Indian restaurant that manages to feel both luxurious and deeply personal — a rare balance that few establishments ever achieve. From the moment you step inside, it’s clear this is no ordinary dining experience. The interior is tastefully designed, blending a touch of colonial grandeur with modern refinement. Warm lighting, rich textures, and carefully chosen details create an ambiance that feels simultaneously upscale and inviting.
Yet, as beautiful as the space is, it’s the food that truly captivates. East India Trading Company presents a menu that honors the culinary traditions of India while embracing freshness and finesse. Each dish arrives as a testament to the chef’s mastery of spice — layered, aromatic, and full of life. The seafood is exceptional: delicately seasoned, impeccably fresh, and cooked to perfection. The curries — from creamy coconut-based delicacies to robust northern-style creations — carry depth and balance, showcasing India’s regional diversity in every bite.
What makes this restaurant stand apart is its ability to deliver both sophistication and heart. In many establishments, one pays either for ambiance or for food — seldom both. Here, the two coexist seamlessly. Every plate feels like the product of thoughtful craftsmanship, every detail of the décor like a quiet celebration of taste.
Adding to its charm is the unmistakable warmth of a family-run business. The owner’s personal presence in the dining room — greeting guests, exchanging a few kind words at each table — imbues the experience with genuine hospitality. It’s this personal touch that turns a fine meal into a memorable evening.
In a dining landscape crowded with trends and fleeting fusions, East India Company stands as a timeless example of what happens when passion, quality, and care come together. It’s not just a restaurant — it’s an experience, a love letter to India’s culinary heritage written in spice, and aroma.
SERVICE – 1: I placed a order over the phone for take-out, approximately 50min before closing, which should be more than enough time to make Hydrabadi Dum Biriyani. I was told the order will be ready in 20-30 min and when i reached the restaurant ~ 30min before closing, the server tells me that they never recieved my order. Then server informs me that phone number from the website was appearantly the restaurant boss’s (Niranjan) number (who has reputation for not placing correct orders from other customers). So I finally get my order, 5 min before restaurant closing after waiting an additional 20min.
FOOD – 2: what I recieved for Lamb Hydrabadi Dum Biriyani was nothing but fried rice cooked in Biriyani masala. Really dissapointed on the quality of the food.
Servers on the other hand were accommodating and dealt with the situation patiently. So if you dine in, tip your server well, they deserve it.

If you’re in Portland Downtown and craving for Indian food, don’t see anywhere else as I explored other places as well.
Very nice looking place, but we had to leave without eating. Ordered Samosas, and specified they needed to be vegan as my son and I are both allergic to dairy and have a dietary preference. They arrived and had been covered in yogurt on top, so we asked the server to bring an order without dairy and reminded him we had specified vegan and dairy allergy. He brought the order back about 1 minute later. The yogurt had literally been scraped off the top.
.you could still see the parts he’d missed. No apology. No attempt to rectify. At that point we had to leave as they clearly tale neither allergies nor dietary preferences seriously, and we have both.
Coming to food , food was very delicious, being vegetarian we tried multiple dishes and all of them were superb. Food presentation and platting was also very good specially Samosa chaat,i have never seen samsa in this shape and platted like this, very tasty, if you really like spicy order for level 4 or 5. Service was very fast and staff was very nice and courteous.Ambience is also very good.
