Unfortunately, our most recent experience changed that entirely.
My husband drove 12 hours to see our son. They decided to go to O’Rourke’s midday and sat at the bar. There were other families present, including young children. My son ordered a water, and my husband ordered a beer. While my husband was not asked for ID, my 24-year-old son was. We fully understand Indiana liquor laws and have no issue with proper ID checks. However, what was upsetting was that the bartender refused to even serve him a water without ID. He had to leave, drive 30 minutes to retrieve his identification, and return just to be served a non-alcoholic drink.
After presenting his ID, they ordered two sandwich wraps. They waited at the bar for an hour and a half with no food. When they politely asked to speak with a manager to understand the delay, they were told by the manager, Angela, that the kitchen was backed up. Yet shortly after, she was seen going into the kitchen and vaping. Meanwhile, the bartender, Lizzy (blonde hair with a choker necklace), was dismissive, rude, and openly disrespectful toward both my husband and my son.
After two hours of waiting, with no food and feeling completely unwelcome, they left.
As parents who have proudly supported Notre Dame and its community, it is heartbreaking to feel this way about a place that once represented warmth and hospitality for our family. O’Rourke’s has always been associated with the spirit of Notre Dame — community, respect, and pride. What we experienced was the opposite.
We will no longer consider this a place to gather when visiting campus, and I will be sharing this experience with fellow alumni and parents. No family should feel disrespected while simply trying to enjoy time with their student.
I truly hope management reflects on this and works to restore the welcoming environment that once made O’Rourke’s special.
Bartender did best he could being understaffed. Surprised kitchen staff did help.
The atmosphere of the place is really fun and largely inspired by Irish culture and the passion for sports from the Notre Dame community.
Service was great, everyone was very friendly. Bathrooms were clean, with free tampons—appreciated!—. I liked that they sell t-shirts with their logo and the Touch Down Jesus, ideal if you’re a football fan at Notre Dame.
I would absolutely come back!
The only downside was an interaction outside. I sat in an empty chair while waiting for one of my sisters, and a waitress came out and very rudely said, “They’re gonna make you get up and move.” No problem getting up, but the attitude wasn’t necessary.
We’re from out of town and didn’t know the open container laws, so my sister asked about it. The same waitress responded with another rude comment: “Don’t you see the bar trolley right there? Yeah, we don’t have open container laws.”
It definitely put a damper on what was otherwise a good stop. The bartenders were great, but the service outside could definitely use some work.
