Reviews
The food tasted fresh with generous portions and absolutely delicious. Had a Maryland style crab cake sandwich with an aioli sauce that balanced out the favors. Crab cake had a nice crunch in the outside while the crab meat was moist on the inside. My wife had the Paris omelette that had caramelized onions, mushrooms, goat cheese, and she added jalapenos. Also had some creamy potatoes that was almost like they boiled the potatoes to make them soft followed frying them for some crunch effect. Nice touch
The service was sincerely friendly as well. We’ll be back for sure!
Butter Cafe markets itself as locally-focused and creatively themed, but our visit revealed serious failures in food quality, service integrity, and public safety. I entered the restaurant intending to review a fun Bridgerton-themed establishment. I am a fan of both the books and the show, so I was genuinely excited to be there.
We were seated inches from a utility cart used as a cleaning station, utensil depot, and chemical shelf. It held open-top mason jars of drinking water, placed there temporarily before being served to a table of guests, and a bottle of Lysol disinfectant, which is a violation of FDA Food Code § 7-201.11. Staff used the cart throughout our meal, resulting in a constant stream of backsides and elbows invading our space. I call it the “asses-in-our-faces” syndrome. It was unsanitary, unprofessional, and deeply uncomfortable.
You can watch the one bottle of Lysol travel the room in the photos.
I ordered the Green Clean Smoothie Bowl ($12.95). It was served with a spoon nearly swallowed by the toppings, which visually emphasized the sheer volume. The presentation alone contradicted the idea of a light, health-conscious meal. The ingredient quality was poor. Canned blueberries, soft pecans, and dry, bagged hard coconut did not reflect the promised freshness. The restaurant compounded this disappointment by the server claiming the large, topping-heavy bowl was only “350 calories.” This figure is nutritionally impossible given the generous portions of calorie-dense peanut butter, pecans, and coconut. Two tablespoons of peanut butter alone contain approximately 190 calories, and there were two tablespoons in a clump at the center of the bowl. A more realistic estimate would be closer to 850 calories. When I pointed this out to the server, he looked at me and said “okay,” then walked away. This apathetic response reflects a systemic lack of accountability.
My husband’s Lord Anthony’s grits bowl ($14.95) came with bland, once frozen turkey sausage. We had to ask for pepper and silverware so he could season it.
The vegan cinnamon roll ($7.95) tasted like a day-old microwaved doughnut. When asked if I wanted to box up my meal, I told the server no, it was horrible. He just walked away.
The Fine Local Hot Tea ($3.95) was a Twinings tea bag. When I asked, the server said “fine local” was just a generic term. I told them to return it.
The environment was chaotic. We observed a reusable cloth left out between tables (Food Code § 3-304.14), a damaged entrance threshold (Food Code § 6-202.11), and a low-hanging chandelier in a walkway (Food Code § 6-202.14). Even the dining room had surface-mounted conduit and mismatched furniture that undermined the supposed theme.
My husband is a board-certified toxicologist. We take safety seriously. This restaurant does not. It is operating under conditions that should be reviewed by local health authorities.
This is the abbreviated version of my review. The full report includes annotated photos, FDA code violations, and a detailed breakdown of systemic failures in food safety and service integrity. I removed the server’s name from the receipt because the fault lies with management, not frontline staff. The issues stem from inadequate training and oversight. I have made every effort to keep this review unbiased by providing photographic evidence to support my claims. Dr. Terry Oroszi
I was a little sad that the menu said “any latte can be made vegan” and then they left stuff off of the one I ordered. For a whopping $2 upcharge, I assumed the whipped cream and toppings would be replaced by vegan whipped cream and toppings. I appreciate having vegan options, but $2 extra to wind up getting less than everyone else is a bummer.
The cleaning solution they use to wipe down tables in between customers smells VERY strong and unpleasant. I briefly felt like I was in a gas station bathroom, but thankfully it disappeared quickly.
I also wish the coffee drinks were served a little hotter (both my black coffee and latte were lukewarm upon serving).
I mention these things not to discourage anyone from going, but in hopes that the cafe takes the feedback to heart. With just a few tweaks I would gladly give this place 5 stars. I did enjoy my experience there and I will definitely come back on future trips to Dayton! Thank you for having a menu that makes folks with diet restrictions feel included.
