After we set foot out of the car, we could immediately smell the comforting and calling aroma of slow burning hickory. Today it wasn’t just saying come on in for great BBQ, it was strongly emphasizing the warmth inside the building.
The restaurant was very busy and we waited a few minutes to get a table. On warmer days there is a large, covered, outdoor seating area which would be wonderful to enjoy BBQ under while watching the small planes arrive and depart. We didn’t meet any pilots but I’m sure on a busier/ warmer day we would have.
I ordered the (BBQ) pulled pork plate, with sides of fries and coleslaw. Our server was very hospitable and kind. In a couple minutes we had the hush puppies served with a jalapeno butter which I found very tasty. She also kept our sweet tea topped off throughout the meal.
When the BBQ pulled pork plate arrived, I could see some bark which is a favorite of mine. The BBQ was tender, but a little dry, with moderate flavor. I tried both sauces which were a Spicy Vinegar and a Honey Barbecue. My taste buds usually prefer vinegar, which had a good flavor but was a bit too spicy for me. The Honey Barbecue was really good. This is actually a tomato based sauce, with a great flavor, which is a rare, but not uncommon, find in the east Carolinas. This is just my opinion, but unfortunately I didn’t feel like it paired well with the BBQ pulled pork, so I stuck with the Spicy Vinegar.
I would definitely come back, to enjoy the airfield and BBQ experience.
prices were fantastic.
We arrived 10 minutes before they opened (a Saturday) and there was a line out the door already. Service was fast, food was warm (and wonderful), and staff was friendly.
We got brisket and pulled pork, brisket was the winner here to me, and some great southern sweet tea.
10/10 would visit on another flight by.
