La Viga continues to fade. The ceviches are bland and so is the guacamole. The tacos definitely are the highlight but even then, the flavors are just not punchy enough. Everything seems to be a blob of bland guacamole mushed with some type of meat. You get better food in Taco Grullense.

Update Mar 2024:
Unfortunately, it feels like the intial glory, character, and vibrancy of La Viga has faded quite a bit. Their initial jolt of energy was no where to be found. No longer was the food “exciting” and punchy but rather a poke or nudge would be more appropriate.
Every plate played it safe and the ingredients did not scream freshness. Definitely still great Mexican food. But it just feels like an average chef is following the original recipies by a creative pioneer.

This joint is a true hidden gem in Redwood City. It’s not even in the main downtown area and rather off the side of the center where the neighborhood might feel a bit less gentrified. But that doesn’t stop it from it being lined up with patrons who are seeking for an authentic Mexican seafood restaurant. The chips and guacamole with fresh feta cheese is right on the spot. Ceviches are fresh and filled with mango and lime. The “paella” is fabulous and tacos try a bit too much with the corn starch wraps but quite delicious. And with the authentic atmosphere, this place is here to stay and thrive. Will return.
