Visit details
Upon arrival, there was no greeting or acknowledgment, even though a staff member with a clipboard was standing right in front, simply staring until addressed first, which set a negative tone right away. After being seated, the server dropped off menus but seemed rushed and impatient while taking the order, which discouraged any additional questions or add-on items.
Ordering and menu issues
Cod fish sandwiches were ordered, but the server later returned to say the item was not available, and when fish and chips were requested instead, it turned out there was no fish available at all that day. This suggests either poor communication about the items or inadequate management of inventory and menu availability.
Food quality concerns
When switching to an avocado-based entrée, the vegetables served with it were in very poor condition, and the fruit on the plate actually had mold on it. Serving molded fruit and bad produce is a serious food safety concern and indicates a lack of basic quality checks before plates leave the kitchen.
Payment and receipt issue
The bill was paid in cash, and the server said she would return with change but never came back and did not provide a receipt. Another female employee, who was friendly and helpful, eventually assisted with getting a receipt, but by then the experience had already reinforced a sense of neglect and poor service.
Overall impression
While this Village Inn location is listed as a standard family restaurant in Aurora, the combination of no greeting, rushed service, unavailable menu items, bad produce, molded fruit, and failure to promptly return with change makes this visit unacceptable. Based on this experience, this will be the last visit to this location, and it would be appropriate for the general manager or district manager to review staff training, food safety, and customer service practices immediately.
The sandwich bread was burnt, and the French fries were practically nonexistent. I counted maybe seven fries total, yet I was charged for a full order. The fries honestly looked like someone had already eaten most of them and sent the leftovers anyway.
The Cobb salad was a complete disaster and didn’t come anywhere close to what it’s supposed to be. It was missing chicken and eggs, the lettuce was old and wilted, and the tomatoes were spoiled. This was not just careless it was flat-out inedible. And that’s why one of the photos is my salad in the trash!!!!
To make matters worse, when I called the store and spoke with the assistant manager, he told me he “checked on my order” and that everything should have been included. That makes this even more insulting. If the order was actually checked, how did no one notice that the salad was missing major ingredients, made with old produce, and that the sandwich bread was burnt and the fries were barely there?
I am appalled at how far customer service and food quality have declined. We are paying more than ever for food, delivery fees, and service, yet somehow receiving burnt food, missing items, spoiled ingredients, and half portions is considered acceptable. This experience was beyond disappointing, and I will seriously think twice before ordering again.
I grew up with Village Inn. My parents used to open new stores for corporate back in the late 70’s, so I got spoiled because everything was made fresh and the service back then was excellent! My dad would train waitstaff to inspect plates of food before serving to make sure it was accurate, presentable, and HOT! If it wasn’t, they were tasked with putting in a reorder and immediately explain to the customer about the delay.
Those days are long gone and I am sorry to say, this new generation just doesn’t operate like that. If the waitstaff gets a plate with cold, burnt bacon, they simply bring it to the table.
This particular location definitely does better than most, but I dare say it’s not consistent.
I give it high marks as compared to other locations that we have been in where it seems nobody cares!
If today’s visit were the “norm”, I would have rated 5 stars. Breakfast was great. My wife had pancakes that were good and hot. I had my go to which is what I consider to be one if the best club sandwiches in Colorado when it’s done correctly! More often than not, the bread is burnt and cold.
