Located steps from The Hermitage Hotel it was a convenient place to pick up food late and enjoy in our room.
The place had zero vibe walking in. Dimly lit, lifeless, and oddly quiet. The kind of place where you instinctively lower your voice because it feels like you’re interrupting the silence. I placed my order at the counter with a cashier who looked like they’d rather be anywhere else, and then waited what felt like an eternity for one of the most underwhelming dishes I’ve ever been served.
The spaghetti and meatballs arrived looking nothing like the picture on the menu board. What I got was a mound of overcooked noodles drowning in what can only be described as baked cheese with a vague hint of tomato. The meatballs were forgettable. The sauce was barely sauce. It was more like someone melted three types of cheese and whispered the word “marinara” into it.
I didn’t even finish it—and that’s saying something. I’m the kind of person who usually finishes every plate. The food was so bleak I didn’t even bother unwrapping the bread. Just stood up, left the plate on the table, and walked out.
There are bad meals, and then there are meals that make you wonder if you were on a hidden camera show. This was the latter. Never again.
I had a craving a calzone, and this happened to be the closest pizza place to where I was staying for the week. I called and ordered a small cheese calzone for pickup and asked when it would be ready, and they said 15 min. I walked there and arrived early because I like my calzones piping hot with a crispy crust and not soggy sad ones sitting on the counter. But even though I arrived early it was ready! Odd… Especially because I didn’t smell tomato sauce or seasoning or yeast in the restaurant, typically the first smells that should hit you when you go to a good pizza joint. Oh well, I quickly walked back to my hotel and opened my box, only to find, to my dismay, a soggy, soft, spongy half moon shaped bread that was cut into pieces (should be one whole piece) with copious amounts of “parmesan cheese” sprinkled (dumped, rather) over it. The cheese was cold inside — the shredded mozzarella still retained its shape (a.k.a. it was not melted) and the ricotta was still close to fridge temp. The side marinara sauce should be warm but it was cold — they must have kept it in the fridge instead of using house sauce that they’d be using for their pizzas and pastas (and since a good sauce has to be cooked low and slow, it’s going to be kept warm for the flavors to meld and stew). The bread (notice I’m calling it bread and not crust) had the texture and flavor of pre-made bulk dough — definitely not house made. I couldn’t even finish my sad calzone because the cold cheese was hard to ingest and the texture of the bread was off. I was better off going to a grocery store and having a Hot Pocket for dinner — it would have been cheaper and more fulfilling than this.
However I commend the staff for their hospitality! Super congenial gentlemen who were friendly and welcoming (perhaps because I was their only customer that day seeing how empty it was). They were very generous with condiments and napkins, too, which is commendable in this economy. The restaurant seemed clean without having the smell of cleaning fluids, so that’s a good sign! But I didn’t smell food, and that’s the first thing that should greet me when I enter. I do wish this establishment good luck because if all of their food is like this faux calzone then they need to find a new chef if they wish to survive.
