We ended up at Big Daddy’s Fish Fry in Tofino after asking ChatGPT for the best fish and chips in town. Hunger decided for us, so we didn’t hesitate.

The ordering system feels rushed – you pay at the window before even seeing the food and are encouraged to tip right away, starting at 10%. Service at the counter was fine, but nothing special. After getting a buzzer, another staff member led us to a table. At first we were seated in what felt like a school cafeteria side alley, but after asking, we were moved to bar stools with a street view, which was much better.

The place doesn’t serve alcohol, so it’s water only, with colourful plastic cups. When your buzzer goes off, you pick up your food yourself – which makes you wonder what the tip was for, though hopefully it goes to the kitchen team working hard in the heat.

Now the highlight: the food. We ordered the halibut fish and chips twice (the first portion is $30, the second fish is an extra $15). It came with coleslaw and was phenomenal. Perfectly golden, great flavour, crispy fries – honestly some of the best fish and chips I’ve had.

Washrooms were clean and the overall atmosphere had a simple island feel, not particularly original but pleasant enough.

Summary: Service and setup could be better, but the food alone makes Big Daddy’s worth a visit. If you’re after top-notch fish and chips, this is the place.

Honestly the best fish and chips I’ve ever had. And I’m from New Zealand! Which is a huge compliment. This place was the highlight of our Tofino trip. The fish was so fresh and we also got the prawns. They were massive. That slaw is also to die for. 10/10!

Asked 2 locals the same question. Where would you recommend going for a good lunch. Both said Big Daddy’s. Ordered a 1 piece lingerie fish and chips. It was fresh and deliscious. The coleslaw was better than other places. Not completely covered in sauce. The fries were crispy and hot. Tartar sauce tangy and yummy. Highly recommend this place this you are hungry.

Just GO!

A true gem of a fish shack where you eat outside on a picnic table …

But what sets it apart is the best fish and chips to just die for! The batter just crackles each bite.. I had the haddock basket and the fish was flaky and had a lovely light flavor..

Paired with a truly homemade tartar sauce you could eat a bowl of it!

On the DONT MISS LIST!

I have had fish and chips from Newfoundland to Halifax to Ireland, England and Scotland, and this by FAR has been my favourite ever. The owner was wonderful, the chowder and Halibut and Chips were 10/10. Thank you for the best experience.

We decided to take a break from our campsite and head into town in search of fish n chips. We accidentally found this place and enjoyed locally caught Ling Cod n Chips. Absolutely fantastic. Even the coleslaw was delicious. Very nice treat. Next time we are in Tofino we are going directly there.

The portions and price are reasonable considering it being located in a touristy area. But seriously the best fish and chips I’ve had in a long time. The batter is so tasty and crispy and the fish is fresh. I was a bit weary after reading tthe reviews including the 1 star ones and I don’t know what they are talking about. The fish pieces are about as long as an Aero chocolate and as thick as two of the stacked on top of each other. The tartar sauce was really good as well. We ordered the halibut and fries and added an extra piece of fish and then went back for 2 more pieces of fish with the tartar sauce. One of my kids who doesn’t even like fish gobbled it up within seconds. The staff are so friendly, patient and kind and make you feel welcome. Definitely recommend as a place to eat in Tofino.

When I came to Big Daddy’s Fish Fry I was fairly unsuspecting of just how blown away I was about to be with the food.
They had a fish cake special, incredibly generous size, and loaded with a delicious Fennel slaw and a wonderful aioli. The fish and chips we received had a perfect crispy coating while the flaky moist fish inside was perfectly done. Awesome fries, a great slaw, and the best setup I’ve seen to get vinegar coated on fries perfectly will have me coming back again to experience more!!
If you’re in Tofino and you need some great food priced well and quickly definitely stop at Big Daddy’s Fish Fry!!
