“The best restaurant in Winchester!” is our diners’ poll’s verdict on Miff Kayum’s Japanese destination, which he opened in 2012 – “a lovely, friendly little place with fantastic sushi” and other “authentic Japanese cuisine, perfectly cooked and presented”. “Excellent staff make it a real dining experience.” Top Menu Tip – the ‘Winchester Roll’ – claiming to be the world’s first sushi roll to use wasabi leaf instead of seaweed. I know that’s a bold statement, but having experienced their Shintaro Spring Menu – a paired tasting that allowed their outrageously talented chef to showcase his skills, I think that anyone eating here would agree.
All the traditional sushi, sashimi, miso, katsu, etc. are of course available and beautifully prepared & presented, but the innovations and unexpected (yet delicious) taste & texture pairings are what makes the Kyoto Kitchen stand out!
I urge everyone who loves Japanese food, (or is just curious to try) to visit and enjoy a marvellous foodie experience!
We drank tea with our meal and it came with warm cups, which were lovely.
We were really impressed with the quality of the food and it was very delicious. There were tastes that I have not had before and I was particularly impressed with the chicken thighs, the garlic rice and the octopus balls. The fish flakes on top of the octopus balls were absolutely delicious.
The staff were friendly, but we did have to prompt them for more drinks as they did not offer.
The taster menu was really good value for money and a good way to try lots of different things. Now we know what we like we will
Go back and try the à la carte.
The signature sushi roll was delicious. And I also enjoyed the small plates I ordered: Beef Tataki and Chicken Karagi.
Food was also reasonably priced.
Looking forward to coming back again.
I honestly don’t even know where to begin — this was hands down the best food I’ve ever had in my life. Every single dish was perfection — from the first bite to the last. The flavours were so fresh and beautifully balanced, and you can tell how much care goes into every detail of the presentation.
The sashimi was melt-in-your-mouth soft, the sauces were rich but never overpowering, and the dessert was the perfect ending. Every course felt like a little piece of art.
The atmosphere was calm and elegant, the plating was stunning, and the staff were so kind and attentive without being overbearing. It’s rare to find somewhere that gets everything so right — food, service, and overall vibe.
If you’re looking for a meal that truly wows you and leaves you speechless, this is the place. I’d give it 10 stars if I could. I’ll be dreaming about this meal for a long time.
Our waiter was Sul who made the entire experience. He was incredibly knowledgeable and helped us get the most out of our order.
Finally we had the banana tempura with rhubarb and rosehip ice cream. We also had a little taste of the salted caramel whisky sauce which was out of this world good.
I would highly recommend this restaurant if you like high quality sushi. Can’t wait to return and try the Omakase.
Thank you Kyoto kitchen
