In 1995 founders Bruce Dean and Bob & Laurie Manley opened the first Black Bear Diner in Mt. Shasta, CA. Their mission was simple: create a fun and friendly atmosphere where the local community could enjoy huge portions of home-style cooking at a reasonable price. Today, we continue their mission at every Black Bear Diner across the country, as we passionately provide guests an outstanding experience. My partner & I love everything about Black Bear Diner in Salinas but the service. Only major complaints are: every time we go, the staff are slow to seat you & once seated, slow to get you a menu so you can order. Many tables are empty ready to seat people, but the staff is way too slow to clear the dirty dishes so they can be available. They really need to get organized or hire staff who are more on the ball clearing tables so customers can sit down.

As far as diners go I really like black bear diner. I ordered their taco salad. As you can see its absolutely massive and very affordable. All the veggies were fresh and the chicken was cooked nicely. Their ranch dressing is good and I enjoyed their taco shell as well

We came in on New Year’s Day, and Bradley K was our waiter — hands down the best service I’ve ever had at Black Bear Diner. He was incredibly friendly, attentive, and on top of everything despite how busy the holiday was.
I’ve eaten here many times over the years, and Bradley truly stood out. He made sure we were taken care of the entire time and did it all with a great attitude. Outstanding job — he’s a huge asset to this location. We’ll definitely be hoping to have him again!

Black bear is pretty consistent with their food and it’s good. Our server tonight was Bradley and probably the best service we have had. He greeted us as we walked in and sat us immediately. Introduced himself and told us about the specials and difference in menus, got us started on drinks and came back to take our order. This guy had multiple tables but consistently checked on us for any refills and how our food was tasting. I saw him and heard him giving the same service to every table. Excellent service and wished us happy holidays and thanked us for coming in. Hopefully Bradley is your next server.

Today, just like on several other occasions, I came to enjoy a nice breakfast here with my friend. We’re local customers, and in previous visits the service has always been decent not excellent, but not bad either. However, today I want to highlight the service from a new guy named Alfredo who gave us truly exceptional service. He was more attentive to us than my actual server. Unfortunately, I had a very bad experience with my server: she never smiled or showed any empathy toward us. The things we asked for to go boxes, A1 sauce, and more coffee never came from her, but thanks to Alfredo he anticipated every need we had. While chatting with him, he told me he’s only been here for a week and is still in training, but that he has five years of experience as a server. And honestly, you can tell. I would love to give this place five stars solely because of Alfredo service and the food, which was truly delicious, but I can’t do that because of the poor service we received from the server whose name I don’t even remember since she never introduced herself. I’d like to think she was simply having a bad day, but even then, she showed no empathy at any moment. Even though Alfredo was handling multiple tables, bussing dishes, and cleaning in what was clearly a very busy workday, he remained attentive, professional, and always smiling. It’s very clear he’s a great person; we insisted more than three times for him to accept the tip and he kept refusing. Thankfully, I made sure he took it before I left, telling him that if he didn’t, I’d have to mention it to his manager. On my next visit, I will definitely ask to be attended by Alfredo.

Great experience at Black Bear Diner! Our server Alfredo C. was on point the whole time — super friendly, great attitude, and somehow always showed up right when we needed something (bear magic ). Food came out cooked perfectly and tasted amazing. Solid service + solid food = definitely coming back.

Ordered to go today Valentine’s Day! Ordered the Chicken and Waffles, and side of Fruit, unfortunately
My fruit contained a slice of onion which ruined the taste of sweet fruit fruit didn’t contain any strawberries and only came with like two grapes, mostly contained the melons.
and my chicken and waffles were burnt ♀️
I didn’t want to send my husband back to the restaurant it was just an inconvenience to have to drive all the way back ♀️
Would probably never order to go again ♀️

It’s a shame that customer service is not a skill that is taken seriously. Went to Black Bear to experience the lack of customer service. No greeting…had to wait until asking if there was a wait time..the said yes and she was getting time to help those waiting. I said ok. Keep in mind it definitely does not look busy. After the couple that was waiting was lead to their seat I asked again about the wait time the girl said it would be 15 to 20 minute wait. I decided not eat at a place that was rude and showed me that it was not busy yet it was. 15 to 20 minute wait on top of the 10 I waited prior to asking
