The Surfing Crab – San Antonio, TX
I placed a to-go order and was impressed with how fast my food was ready—definitely a smooth and efficient experience. The staff greeted me right when I walked in and directed me to the to-go counter, where I was taken care of very quickly. Great customer service on that front.
As for the food, it was hot, fresh, and packed with flavor. Everything was well-seasoned and marinated to perfection, which seafood lovers will appreciate. The portion sizes were generous, especially the potatoes, although they could’ve been cooked a little longer for a better texture. The corn and sausage were sliced paper-thin, and I personally prefer them a bit thicker. Also, unlike the locations in Houston or Corpus Christi, they don’t provide sides of butter, which was a noticeable difference.
Overall, a solid 3-star spot if you truly know your seafood. Great flavors and fast service, but there are a few small things that could be improved.
So I’m an over the road TRUCK DRIVER and I stop all over the country to try different foods I ordered from this place via Uber Eats delivery because I had my trailer, I found a place to drop it near the house so I changed it to pickup. I bobtailed to the restaurant to pickup my order and the Manager Zane retrieved my order under the name I gave him(my government name) and as he overlooked the order several times and was clearly confused.. He assumed I was a delivery boy for this company. He asked me to confirm a pickup and I told him sir this is my order personally. I told him I’m a truck driver, He said ok. Then the host then gets involved for no reason and is telling him to check the order and then proceeds to ask me to show her the order. I said to the kid, this is insulting! I’m not a worker, I’m an owner operator of a trucking company! I understand this is a $100 order but it’s already paid for so to keep badgering me on an order you already have been paid for, led me to believe that discrimination had really come in to play. I told them in the notes to pack my wife’s ice cream separately and they still put it right on top. Why would you put cold ice cream on top of hot food?? Anyway I at least gave a few stars because the food was decent enough when I finally got home and sat down with my beer- (of course I asked for napkins and gloves and got neither…)they Could have added some salt to the water of the potatoes or something because it was just seasoning and butter. I got my culinary degree from Le cordon Bleu, so I be knowing. I can’t make a crab boil in the truck but stuff like this is why I cook mostly in the truck. I won’t be back with my hard earned money but y’all enjoy!
Good:
The staff was perfect and patient and the restaurant seems very fun and many people inside so I thought I was in for a treat. Also the wait time wasn’t bad.
Bad:
The food was not good. The shrimp was so overcooked it was soft and squishy when you bit into them. (I couldn’t finish it.) The clams were also overdone and still had sand in them. I got the surfing Seasoning and was almost flavorless.
This meal is too expensive for it to be that bad. Maybe I just came at the wrong time, but that was a bad first experience for a $35, one person meal.
