I went for brunch. This place was recommended to me by a friend. I would not recommend it. It took about 50 minutes for the food to come out. I ordered a tofu scramble, and it did not even fill the plate. It was cold and there was no flavor. The only reason I knew there was turmeric in it is because the dish was yellow. The description said it would have peppers, onions, mushrooms, carrots, broccoli, and squash. There were a few peppers and a few onions from what I could see. I would’ve tried something different, but once the server dropped the food off, I didn’t see her again until everyone else had finished eating. I didn’t have to pay for my food and my friends said their food was okay. The server also told me that most of their vegetarian options were not gluten-free.

I’ve had food with a live fly in it, plastic, food container dye, and somehow this was quite literally the worst dining experience of my life. At least those were all over quickly, the staff actually cared about the error, and I didn’t have to pay for a meal I couldn’t eat. Here, the food took over 50 minutes to come for 3 people; in that time, my friend had to cancel her order and leave because waiting longer would have made her miss her train. I asked when the food was coming, and the waitress told me she’d check on it, then walked away and started texting on her phone. Never got back to me. Then when it came, the order was wrong. They left out one of the sides. I had to go find a waitress to correct the error, who then acted like she had done me the biggest favor by giving me a 30% discount for the wait. I put everything in a to go bag and left with my partner to go eat somewhere else, because no service is better than poor service, but somehow in the hour I was there they’d managed to deliver both. I start eating, and the vegan chai French toast had no taste. It was basically like eating soft styrofoam. Chai is a strong flavor, but somehow they managed to leave it out. And then the omelette had eggshells in it. I tried to eat just the filling, but found eggshells there as well. If I had to wait an hour, the order should be correct and edible. I’m going to contact them for a refund, and if I ever have the misfortune to end up at this slipshod establishment again, rest assured I will go somewhere else to save my time and money. I won’t rate the food or the service specifically, because 0 stars is exactly what they deserve.

Good diner style breakfast. plenty of vegan offerings although I stuck to the good old sausage and eggs. Super busy and pretty loud atmosphere but good food and great location for the VCU campus kids and those just wandering down Cary Street.

We were greeted immediately and told to sit where we would like. Service was consistent through out the meal with checkin’s. I will say we would have appreciated some smiles from the staff. The menu was a little challenging one side verses 2 in some cases and upcharges here and there for some sides. Overall breakfast was very good. Pancakes and omelet with sides. Atmosphere was ok, couldn’t appreciate the flying bates. Overall I would come again. Thank you the food was very tasty.

The service was very attentive. They offer a wide selection of draft beers, including the IPA I had, which was excellent. The food was, of course, delicious and very fairly priced.
Highly recommended!

Woke up after not having dinner the night before and really wanted a savory vegan breakfast. This place has tons of options, and I settled on the vegan chorizo breakfast tacos. They were absolutely delicious. They looked very appealing, on the plate, and the portion was very generous. They were well seasoned, but not too spicy. On addition, there was a very flavorful salsa verde in a ramekin on the side. The places is small, and full of eclectic art pieces on the wall. The staff was friendly enough, but it’s not readily apparent if you’re to sit yourself or be seated. Overall though, a really great meal at a fair price. Thank you!

I discovered 821 cafe on a Facebook group about restaurants in Richmond when I queried vegan restaurants in the area.. it was highly recommended and definitely did NOT disappoint. We had divine “chicken” wings, vegan chili and a really delicious salad. I only took one picture though- but we will definitely be coming back! I want to try it all! We also had excellent service. The restaurant is so cute, definitely one of my new favorite spots!!

The service was okay, not as friendly. It took the server a while to come over to the table with menus. She didn’t say her name, and she didn’t say whether there were specials or just ask if this was our first time (which it was). Maybe we expect way too much from a server. But when you are paying someone/the restaurant, you want to receive both good food and good services. However, the food was good. We had the cheese steak and the black bean & sweet potato burger, both with fries. The service would be one reason I wouldn’t dine in again.

The restaurant is a good brunch meet up spot on the VCU campus area with plenty of street parking. The prices are reasonable and they have a good selection of traditional and vegan friendly food options. Great for meet up gatherings, but they have a small dining and bar area to eat at. Friendly staff service.

We’re addicted to their vegan food! We go here at least once a week. Only issue is night staff is nothing like the daytime staff. The daytime staff are great!
But I still rate them 5 stars because the food is always delicious and hot. The custom mocktails are AMAZING every time.
