We ordered chicken fajitas, tortilla soup (with chicken, cheese on side) and for dessert, an apple flauta. The food was all great, but two unique things stood out: the beans on the side were DELICIOUS (I even ordered extra to go); and the flauta was really unique (I have not seen dessert flautas in a lot of places).
Also want to call out the service. We weren’t sure if we wanted a full mole dish, so asked to taste the sauce. Everyone makes mole different. They came back with a small tasting serving that helped us make the choice! (It was a great mix of sweet and spicy, but we instead decided on the fajitas since they are easier to eat for the road.)

In terma of food quality: fish tacos were bland and salsa tasted… frozen. Fajitas were over-cooked…
The restaurant was was very short-staffed. Our server was very nice, but we could see she’s exhausted by the end of the night. We did come during Thanksgiving break, which might contribute to the not-so-great food quality 🙁
Still, support your local business

We came here with our family for a Sunday dinner while in Capitol Reef over the fourth of July and everyone loved it! The food was great, the service was prompt and the value for the food was good. We got there early enough but it definitely filled up and they were turning people away – so get here early if it’s a holiday or weekend. This is authentic Mexican.

I found this place from high rated place, so pretty crowded and only 2 servers working there. Pretty slow but waiting with welcome chips and salsa are great! Refill for both was $3, but worth it! We ordered Cali Brito and enmoladas the amount was great so we packed left overs. Frech salsa was still good next day.

Checking in after our second time at Chak Balam! The food is authentic and absolutely delicious. We ordered various items off the food menu, enchiladas, tacos, salads, and burritos all yummy! The chips and salsa that come out as soon as you sit down is mouth watering. The service was quick and kind. This place is well worth the stop and a must have for travelers after a day at the park!

Technically, 2.5 stars.
Americanized Mexican food. They didn’t seem happy when we wanted certain customization with our tostada salads. My friend’s dad got the chimichangas and he said it was full of cheese. I had vegetable soup and it was like diluted tomato soup from a can with veggies, $3 extra to add chicken. The chips and salsa are free for the first basket only. Overall, expensive for meh food.

I recently ate here and overall had a decent experience. If you’re looking for good Mexican food in Torrey, this is probably your best bet. My only real complaint was the service. The staff didn’t come across as very friendly, and it took a long time for anyone to take our order. They also never checked in on us during the meal. That said, once the order was finally taken, the food came out fairly quickly and was pretty good—not amazing, but definitely something I’d eat again.

Chak Balam in Torrey is amazing! I highly recommend the chips and enchiladas. And of course you can’t forget the dessert. Authentic Mexican flavors, friendly staff, and a cozy vibe make it a must-visit after a day hiking in Capitol Reef.

Great place to eat after a day at capital reef. We split the enchiladas, with rice and beans and added a cheese casadilla. We got 1 chicken, one babacoa and one pork enchilada. All were good, but my favorites were the pork and beef. The beans were very good.
We each had a margarita which was very good as well.
