Ethan did a great job. The food was good. The atmosphere seemed overdone. Super ritzy high class looking place for a middle of nowhere supper club. New linens for every diner. Lots of pomp ans circumstance. It was weird. Being met at the bar by the waitor to order and being like are we getting a table? Only to order and have them say ok ill go prep your table. Also super weird.
The absolute worst part though… after spending over $40 for two people for the chicken and ham family style dinner. Being brought out 4 people’s worth of food. We ate a hard maybe 1 or 2 thirds worth of the food and even that was a struggle. I expected to be asked if we wanted a box for the leftovers. That food would have fed me for a weeks worth of lunches at work. Instead they grab the plates one on top of the other and whisk them away. I was going to ask about a box but i was just so flabbergasted. What an absolute waste of food. I was appalled. Either do smaller portions or give out take home boxes. I will not be coming here again just because of that.

I went to a banquet at noon on a Sunday. The parking lot was packed and the dozen carryout parking spots were filled. They’re chicken was fantastic, as was the beef tips and all the sides. The staff was very polite and attentive without being intrusive. Bar bar poured a good old fashioned. The rooms can be closed off for privacy and sound mitigation for other patrons. These folks do it right and you won’t be disappointed.

Took advantage of a traditional Friday fish at this iconic spot. We had lunch, I had the cod platter $23.95, huge portion! Included potato (I had broasted), coleslaw and bread. I had enough to take home for another meal. My friend had a cod sandwich-$11.99. We both loved our food, will definitely be back.

Van Abel’s was an excellent choice for our wedding catering. We chose the hot sandwich buffet with hot turkey and hot beef, along with garlic mashed baby red potatoes, and it was a huge hit with our guests. Some enjoyed the meat on buns, others ate it on its own, and many loved putting the turkey or beef over the mashed potatoes. Everything was hot, flavorful, and well prepared. The service was professional and well organized, and dinner ran smoothly and on time. As an added bonus, they packaged up all of the buffet leftovers for us to take home, which we really appreciated. We received so many compliments on the food and would absolutely recommend Van Abel’s for wedding catering.

Our family loves coming here and has always had an exceptional experience. However, this last time was so disappointing.
Kathy (bartender) was the rudest bartender i have ever encountered. It wasnt even so bad that she was clearly annoyed that we ordered 4 alcoholic ice cream drinks, but she made it the hardest trying to use a “free chicken dinner” coupon after we paid our bill. Mind you, I just paid $90 freak dollars and she was argumentative saying we shouldve ordered that dinner item to go right when we got there, why does that matter? She also was questioning who our waitress was as if we didnt order anything at all (thought we were lying), if you’re going to make that big of a stink about a coupon then you shouldn’t hand them out.
We eventually got the coupon thing figured out and thought all was fine, then she proceeded to tell another customer “im gonna need a drink after this” and she was not discrete about it. Absolutely appalling.
Not sure that we’ll be back after that experience unfortunately.

My husband and I recently had our wedding here and had the best experience from the start! Patty was great to work with from the start with my many questions. Day of the wedding the staff was fantastic and speedy. We received many compliments from our guests about how wonderful the food was and how quickly the staff provided food to the tables as we had a family style dinner. I would recommend Van Abel’s to anybody getting married and having a larger wedding! They even boxed up to-go boxes for my husband and I at the end of the night without us even asking, which I thought was very thoughtful.

First time to have dinner here and expected a classic supper club. No such luck! We arrived and grabbed a seat at the bar. The drinks were poorly made. I am a old world supper club bartender, so I know. The whiskey sour did have a nice whiskey to sour ratio and the old fashion was not muddled and overloaded with bitters. Sadly, dinner disappointed, as well. The salad had no croutons and the hot bacon dressing–well you can erase the “hot”, as it was cold sweet/sour that you poured over with a few bacon crumbles on the salad. They need to stop at The Waters in New London to see how to do it properly. The bread basket- straight out of the refrigerator and the butter was packets frozen. This place needs to read up on what a real supper club is and what should be served. Warm bread would have been nice and rye bread for a Friday night even better with the fish. I will say the fish we had–pan fried walleye and perch, was absolutely delicious. We both agreed we would come back for the fish. They are not a true supper club.

The service was fantastic! The waitress was attentive but not overbearing. The food was good at a fair price. It’s worth the drive to experience Van Abel’s. We’ll go back.

They catered to my place of employment today. Holy crap what happened? Plain and tasteless coleslaw. Brown goo that I think was supposed to be dressing? Green beans were terrible. Dry chicken. Pitiful all around. I told my boss to find someplace else next time.
