Stopped into Chupacabra Cantina on East 6th and it’s a decent option when you want Tex-Mex and a lively bar vibe in the same place. The atmosphere is fun and casual, and it’s easy to pop in for tacos, a margarita, and some music. The good stuff: quick bites hit the spot and the drinks are easy to order. The not-so-good: when it’s packed, service can slow down and the food can feel a little inconsistent depending on what you get. Overall, I’d go back for a laid-back pre-game or late-night stop, just keeping expectations realistic.

We saw the food photos online and were excited to sit and have a snack before heading to a nearby comedy show. We walked by and were confused, because it doesn’t look anything like the photos and definitely didn’t appear to have food. We were going to leave, but were ushered in and decided to have a drink since we were already here. The bartender was impatient with me, but did help my friend kindly with a beer and I appreciated that. It was very slow at the time we arrived. I do think that their social media should be updated to reflect that they no longer serve food.

Joe the bartender was lovely. My bf and I were visiting austin and he took fantastic care of us at the bar and gave us GREAT taco recommendations (and was an East Coast-er like us!). The giant marg was the size of my skull and then some, and we even did a shot on the house. This place rocked, thanks Joe from Brooklyn!

There was food here less than 2 years ago, with photo proof literally on Google. However, the bartender working was extremely rude to me and made me feel stupid when I asked to order food. He said this bar has never had food for the entire 5 years theyve been open. Thats super incorrect sir, ive eaten here multiple times. He would not let me be right. Not sure what his deal was, but they don’t have food here anymore even though it states online that they do. Without the food, this bar just sucks. The vodka sodas taste like the water has been sitting in a sewer for months. Won’t ever come back here now that the food is gone.

So I went to this place four, yes four, nights in a row… It was two blocks from my hotel, and honestly I just wanted to not go far and be able to get a drink and decent food (it’s Austin after all).
First, get the Orange Brisket taco and stop asking so many questions. Get the dang thing and be happy. Happy hour regularly had $3 frozen margaritas. What are you complaining about?
They’ve got some chef back there making this menu with love and attention. And the chefs that carry out this menu do so with fantastic consistency. I mean, I brought my Austin friends here (“Never heard of it…”) And they were really impressed by the price, the service, and the quality.
Get the tostadas (obviously), and if you’re looking for some low-key vibes and good music, hang out here after dark. The crowd tends not to be too young (a good thing, let the early 20-somethings have the rest of 6th Street). It wasn’t too crowded (weekday crowd was always chill).
And the bar tenders there took care of me. Just overall a fantastic experience, from the food to the drinks to the service to the music. This is my new go-to spot if no one has a preference for what to do in Austin. Always had a good time, always got what I expected, and rarely walked out paying more than I planned.
Place is a sleeper and I hope it sticks around and stays that way.
TRY THE BRISKET TACOS GOSH DARNNIT.

The drinks were really tasty at the Chupacabra. I had the hibiscus margarita. I really enjoyed it. The bartenders were super nice and friendly too! Definitely has a cool atmosphere in here!

I really nice space with decent food. My waitress was fast and super friendly. I ate inside but they have tables set up along the street if people-watching is your thing. After I ate I pulled out my laptop and hung out for a while. They have a few TVs behind the bar as well.

Typical bar atmosphere but nice selection of unusual but delicious street tacos (along with other Mex stuff but I didn’t look past the tacos) and craft beers.
Tacos are a decent size and could have stopped at two — Honey Jalapeno Fried Chicken and Baja (Fried Catfish) — but had to try the Chipotle Orange Brisket which was probably my favorite. Pecan Porter was a nice complement to the tacos! Staff was very friendly. I would return.

What a great place! If you’re looking for someplace a little out-of-the-way, little out of the ordinary, this is what you want… Right here on 6th Street.
For dinner, I had the avocado salad, and the chupacabra… Barbacoa taco with all the works. Absolutely outstanding!

Great staff. Great room. Convenient to 6th street, Moody Amphitheater, and across from Stubbs.
Stay here, you won’t be disappointed.
