We ordered two glasses of wine, one red moscato for my husband, and one white moscato for myself. The red wasn’t a hit, but the white was. Not a problem of the restaurants, just personal preference.
We received our salad and bread with our dinner selections. Both were good. But, dinner was a problem. I ordered the Pesce Emil. Which sounded good after reading the description. Husband ordered the tortellini. We received our food in a timely manner, but my plate was anything but appetizing looking. I was quite turned off but the look of my plate. I really had a difficult time taking that first bite when my plate looked the way it had.
The way I described the plate to my husband was that it looked as if I was eating a Salisbury steak that had come from a frozen meal pack. Which, if not obvious, is not a compliment. The “fish” was covered over firstly in a slab of cheese and then the sauce, which looked entirely like a gravy. Topped “lovingly” with three pieces of broccoli.
I was expecting broccoli florets to be placed on and around the fish. Not just placed on top of the “gravy.” But, the WORST part of this plate, by far, was the fish. Written on the menu as “breaded fish fillet sautéed and topped with melted Italian cheese, served in a white wine lemon sauce, with mushrooms and broccoli in the sauce”. Why only three pieces of broccoli?
But, back to the fish. The fish was breaded, as described. But I took my fork to it and had to apply a lot of pressure to puncture the breading. The breading on the fish would have better suited ANYTHING else. A schnitzel, or perhaps a chicken cutlet. Not a fish. Halfway through my meal, I decided to stop fighting my fish breading and simply cut the breading open with my knife and scooped the fish OUT of the breading. More horrifying, the breading stayed together in a single piece as if it was a pocket to hold the fish. Which had little flavor on its own.
My husband ended up eating the breading, but was able to hold the entire breading up on a fork. Good breading should not do that. Especially for a fish dish.
Though the pasta I received with my meal was good and I was sad to realize I’d left it at the restaurant after getting home.
I’m sure my husband will talk me into trying this place at least once more. But first impressions are the most important and this one was sadly not a good one. Finally, was expecting more from a dinner selection costing 24.99.
My boyfriend and I recently visited Rich and Charlies in Kirkwood, MO, for dinner, and our experience was a mix of delightful and disappointing elements.
Starting with the positives, we began our meal with the fried zucchini appetizer, which was absolutely delicious. The breading was perfectly crispy, and the zucchini was tender and flavorful. For our entrees, we had the Cajun chicken and shrimp pasta and the Quattro Formaggio with chicken. Both dishes were fantastic, bursting with flavor, and cooked to perfection. We had no complaints about the food.
Our server, Spencer, was also excellent. He was very hospitable, attentive, and made sure we had everything we needed throughout our meal.
However, there were a few aspects that detracted from our overall experience. The ambiance of the restaurant was rustic and dark, which is typical for an Italian eatery and generally acceptable. However, upon entering, we noticed a distinct smell that can only be described as old. This initial impression was somewhat off-putting and made me feel a bit hesitant and paranoid about the cleanliness of the kitchen. I truly hope that the smell does not reflect the kitchen’s condition.
Another issue we encountered was with the drinks. We ordered lemonade and raspberry tea, but both were overly tappy and difficult to drink. This was a significant letdown, as a good drink can greatly enhance a meal.
Overall, while we enjoyed the food and appreciated the excellent service from Spencer, there are a few areas that could use improvement. With some attention to the ambiance and drink quality, Rich and Charlies could provide an even better dining experience.
Went back this weekend and forgot how great the food was. Excellent lasagna and st louis style pizza. Toasted ravioli was wonderful. Warm bread and of course their famous house salad. Tons of seating. Huge parking lot in the back. Family friendly. Able to accommodate parties. Nice bar with seating in the front of the building. Good lighting. Great portions and prices.
1. Toasted ravioli – these were pretty good, not the star of the evening. (4/5 )
2. Zucchini fries – these were . I thoroughly enjoyed this dish and would order every time we came. (7/5 )
3. Kids and meatball – this was great for a kids dish and tasty. Their sauce is delicious, and the meatball was prepared well. (4.5/5 )
4. Chicken Spedini with white pasta – this dish was recommended by my SO and our server. It is one of the top 5 chicken dishes I have had. The chicken was soo good and the pasta paired well. (10/5 )
5. Cannelloni – This dish was average today, and my SO gave it a St. Louis C for grading purposes. (3.5/5 )
This is a family-friendly restaurant with great dishes and service. If you are in the area, give them a visit it’s delightful.
