Mr Tanaka’s was established in the heart of Ellerslie in June 2020. Born out of our love for Izakaya dining, our menu offers a fresh, modern take on Japanese with yakitori inspired skewers, sashimi, and sharing plates. All complimented by a wide selection of sake, beer and Japanese spirits. We pride ourselves in providing a fun, vibrant experience to our guests and look forward to welcoming you into Mr Tanaka’s!

Went for lunch and thoroughly enjoyed yummy Japanese cuisine. Very clean, yummy food, nice relaxing music, very friendly and welcoming staff. My husband wanted to have teriyaki salmon which wasn’t on the menu but the staff that served us went out of his way and spoke with the chef to accommodate us. Generous portion of salmon served with rice n salad. Definitely coming back again for more. Highly recommended.

I saw Mr Tanaka resturant on Facebook and wanted to try something new , booked online in advanced for date day lunch with hubby and we didn’t know what to expect , however we were greeted with great service and the perfect seat arrangement in the lantern area , I was so grateful the server and chefs were able to cater to my diet I was on , had tofu brocolli , eggplant and miso soup , bro the eggplant STUNNING all dishes were perfect , my husband got the karage chicken and rice x2 he loved this, and soft shell taco he wasn’t to much of a fan but he was very satisfied with his food and it was enough for us. I can’t wait to not be on a diet and try the rest of the menu. Thank you to our server for his great service and also the other girl who was serving too. Highly recommend Mr Tanakas. Try it for yourself.

Pretty good Japanese cuisine. We used last table and had a good deal.
Beef Tataki was good with large slice of beef and tasty.
Sushi was not bad and sashimi was a little thick and not as delicately sliced as proper Japanese restaurant.

Overpriced for what you receive. The food quality was average at best (the tuna didn’t taste fresh) and the portions were quite small. The $20 NZD “2-for-1” karaage promotion felt misleading. The wagyu beef tasted more like standard scotch fillet or a lower-grade cut; it wasn’t tender as expected. Service was also average, and the atmosphere wasn’t particularly inviting.
If you’re looking for high-quality food and service (an 8–10 out of 10 dining experience), this may not be the right place. It seems better suited to diners with more modest expectations who never tried Japanese “styled” food rather than those seeking refined Japanese flavours and/or a high-end dining experience.

I organised an end of year dinner for our class at Mr Tanakas tonight (13 of us). The entire process for organising the dinner was seamless and the team were so accommodating even when things changed a few times.
The vibe of the restaurant was really cool, the service was awesome, the food was scrumptious and we were all full from our the $65 p/p set menu + a couple of other yummy dishes. The cocktails and wines were great and we had the pleasure of dining in the Lantern room which was such a fun vibe and included karaoke. Unfortunately we didn’t capture photos of the food.
Anyhow – I’d like to thank the staff for their wonderful service tonight!! ❤️

This place is awesome. The service, the food, the atmosphere. Celebrated my son’s birthday and he received a free dessert Candles were also provided for our BYO cake! The food here is delicious and at an awesome price point. We will definitely be back. Thanks team for a great first experience

An amazing birthday dining experience with excellent communicative service team and wonderful atmosphere not to mention beautifully cooked and presented menu. We were seated 3-4min after our reservation time (which was of no worry to us) and the lovely staff brought a couple delicious cocktails our way for free which was a super lovely gesture! We look forward to dining with you again! Also please, the staff especially our host made the whole dinner enjoyable for the whole family

Every dish was amazing and full of surprises – I especially recommend the Beef Tataki.
When making the reservation, I asked if there was anything special for birthdays, and was told a special message could be added to the dessert plate. I thought that was a lovely idea and gave my booking details, but when the dessert arrived there was no message. A little bit of a pity , but overall we still had a wonderful time.
