I recently attended a presentation at this establishment, and while the venue presents a “dive bar vibe,” the lack of professional protocol and basic hygiene was unacceptable. As someone who takes safety and professional standards seriously, I was disappointed by the total lack of oversight in the following areas:
1. Food Quality & Safety Concerns
Undercooked & Scorched: The sliders were served with scorched buns, yet the meat was medium-rare and the cheese was completely unmelted. This indicates a rushed kitchen and inconsistent temperature control.
Structural Failure: The pizza was a “gloppy mess.” The crust had zero structure, hanging off the fingers, suggesting it was significantly underbaked or improperly topped.
Wet Dishware: When we went to serve ourselves the pizza, the plates were still wet from the wash. Stacking wet plates is not only unprofessional—it is a hygiene risk that promotes bacterial growth.
2. Neglected Maintenance
Sanitation: My table was so sticky and covered in crumbs that I had to manually brush it off just to be able to write notes for the presentation.
Physical Hazards: The red plastic glasses for our iced tea had chipped rims. Serving drinks in damaged glassware is a safety hazard to every patron.
Condiment Failure: The Parmesan shaker was ice-cold and clumped so badly it couldn’t be used, and the Cholula bottle was essentially empty (less than two teaspoons remaining).
3. Lack of Professional Service
Communication: The food was brought out to a serving table without any announcement. We only realized the pizzas had arrived because I happened to see the waitress out of the corner of my eye.
Proactive Service: Condiments should be provided before or with the meal. Instead, we had to hunt for basic items after the food was already on the table.
Conclusion
It shouldn’t take a patron or a professional diagnostic to ensure a restaurant is safe and clean. Whether a “dive” or a fine-dining establishment, the fundamentals of dry plates, clean tables, and cooked food are non-negotiable. Management needs to be held accountable for this total lack of professional protocol. I look forward to a response that acknowledges these failures.
Sometimes, the staff has been short handed; but they’re always pleasant, and polite. Thanks!
I had a taste for a burger and even though it’s really well known for its great pizza and Italian food their burger was incredible. It was big, cooked perfectly and so Juicy. I enjoyed it immensely and had plenty for leftovers.
Maggie the GM is a sweetheart and everyone was so friendly.
What really surprised me was how great their cocktails selection was…I had an excellent Skinny Margarita and my husband had a Top shelf Old Fashioned and it was excellent. He was very impressed and then he had a Flight of Margaritas…4 different Marg versions and he loved those as well.
You will not be disappointed… Oh and we met the Mayor of River Grove there! What a great guy and he seemed to know everyone…
If the Mayor is going there I think that’s a pretty good indication 🙂
The Village of River Grove even held an event there that I attended and it was fabulous. Everyone loved the venue, the drinks and the staff. Please don’t be swayed by one bad review. Truthfully that review is not representative of D’Agostino’s at all.
I gotta say tho chicken wings were a huge disappointment. You really should source higher quality wings. Over sized most likely pumped with antibiotics. The “jumbo” wing faze is fading out. If you keep serving them at least increase the cook time on them. Had 2 wings from our order and knew it was best to throw the rest out to avoid being sick.
