I know everyone is tired of seeing my mostly 5 star reviews! But, this place is truly a great place to go for lunch. Everything so far is delicious. I highly recommend any of the burgers! Haven’t tried the other main courses yet but I will in the future.

First time trying Burger in the Square after moving to Roanoke was an amazing experience. They have a huge menu of specialty burgers, and I really wanted to try every single one, but I stuck with the standard barbecue bacon for my first time. We split waffle fries, and onion rings as well. The burger was juicy and cooked perfectly, and the fries and onion rings were crisp and fresh. If I wasn’t so full I definitely would have ordered a shake too. The staff was super friendly, and even made a point to come by and check on us. Great food and great service – I’m definitely a fan and will be back.

Ive been a customer of Burger in the square since they started on the market. We’ve always loved coming here because you could get a quick and easy order experience and the burgers were so juicy and delicious.
Unfortunately now with the new ownership its declined extremely.
We came in on Friday around 530pm and were told that we now sit and the waitress takes your order. We really loved the fact that you could walk up and order and not wait. Which is what we did, the waitress was tied up at other tables. There was no rhyme or reason to who would be doing what. We sat for about 10 to 15 minutes waiting to place our order and then noticed that there were no longer any spicy options for burgers which is what my husband loved the most.
Our food took quite a while and I noticed our food sitting on the counter but no one was bringing it. There was a young blonde woman that looked like she didn’t know what she was supposed to be doing, just kind of wandering around the kitchen are picking up random things when she could have been bringing our food that was getting cold to the table. Once our food got there the portions were very small and the burger patties were much different. They didn’t taste like burger in the square anymore and they didn’t look like they had been hand pattied. The waitress did apologize and it definitely wasn’t her fault but we were really disappointed. This was the one place in Roanoke that had not changed and then…it did.
In a world full of change sometimes its good to remain the same. They took something that worked and tried to make it better but it isnt working.
Go back to ordering at the counter and get your old burgers back. That’s how you keep customers.
We probably wont be back for a long time. Hopefully someone reads these comments and actually goes back to the way it was. We need that ! And the previous owners deserve that. They worked hard to create a wonderful business they deserve to see it continue and know that it was left in good hands.

This ain’t it yall !

I ordered a hot dog with chili, mustard and onions and onion rings. My grandson ordered a bacon cheeseburger, waffle fries and a cookies and cream milkshake. He thoroughly enjoyed everything he ordered. I enjoyed the onion rings. They weren’t outstanding, but they were okay. The chili on my hot dog was tasty. The hot dog probably would have been tasty, but it was cold and the bun was as dry as could be. I’m sure I could have sent it back and they would have made it good, but we have no time for that.

I’m going to agree with the past reviews . I am happily surprised. The Burger selection is incredible. The straight fries were cooked to time perfection for shoe string . And my wow moment ? Their Hushpuppies. Good lawd yum . Moving to Roanoke for Richmond , I keep finding amazing gems. Making Richmond look bad !!!! Well done all well done . Staff was amazing

This past Saturday was our first visit since the ownership change. While we, like everyone, loved the counter service at the old place, our experience was still great. I still was able to order my favorite, the Switzer burger, and top it with A1 sauce as I always have. It was still excellent even with the change in the burger patty used. Our service was also prompt and friendly. We will be back, you didn’t lose us.

The burger was of course fantastic but the environment is even more noteworthy! The burger chefs are creative and listen to feedback and come up with new ideas to make your taste buds dance even more!

I’ve been eating here since I moved to Roanoke over twenty years ago back when the restaurant was still located in the market building. The restaurant has recently sold, and while I congratulate the old owner for his retirement, the new owners have managed to strip this place of everything that made it feel special, seemingly overnight.

The service, food, menu, ordering process, pricing, and atmosphere are all completely different. Although the menu has a lot of favorites and familiar names, there were several subtle changes in the food that went along with the new lackluster experience. I’m not sure if it’s different ingredients, techniques, or both. This is a huge hit to the local restaurant community. I really hope they return this institution to the way it should be. Unfortunately, we will no longer patronize this new business.
