We had lunch at Joyful Garden and really enjoyed the experience. The quality of the food was excellent — everything tasted fresh, authentic, and beautifully prepared.

We especially appreciated the vegetarian options they offered, which gave us plenty of delicious choices.

The menu is very extensive, and at first we found it a bit difficult to decide what to order. However, one of the waiters was incredibly patient and kind, taking the time to explain the dishes and recommend options for us. His help made all the difference, and we truly appreciated the effort.

Great food and wonderful service — we would definitely come back!

I went to Joyful Garden for dim sum with my family and absolutely loved the nostalgic vibe. It’s one of the more popular dim sum spots around the Boston area, and you can really feel why.

What stood out the most was the old-school push-cart dim sum service, something you rarely see these days. It honestly brought back memories of having dim sum in Guangdong as a kid. The atmosphere feels very traditional and comforting.

The food itself was solid and consistent. Nothing overly fancy, but everything tasted good and well-executed. Portions were reasonable, and prices were fair compared to other dim sum places in the area.

Overall a great spot if you’re craving classic Cantonese dim sum with a traditional experience. Definitely recommended, especially if you miss that old-school dim sum culture.

This is our usual takeout place to get weekend dim sum. The food comes on time and is always consistently good. My favorites are the shumai, shrimp hargow, eggplant stuffed with shrimp, and the custard buns

Okay okay. The location may be interesting but the food is surely not. Its authentic Chinese food nestled next to the RMV and a few questionable stores. If you enjoy classic chinese dishes and dim sum you will like this place. The food comes out quick, the atmosphere is busy and smells great. 10/10 would come again with some dim sum loving friends.

I really like their dim sum, where the servers push carts with food around the dining area, and customers and pick any dish they want.

Their regular dinner menu is also solid, especially the seafood like jumbo clambs. However, the veggies we had were not very fresh and the poached chicken was just okay.

The service can be slow sometime, partly because it’s a huge dining area.

Food was absolutely delicious. I really liked the table tea as well. Service was good too, however they do let you be, so if you need something make sure to flag someone down.

The food is generally very authentic and good here, the closest to Cantonese dim sum outside of Chinatown and Quincy. We usually do take out here but have dined here for lunch and dinner, mostly positive experiences. The dim sum variety is plentiful and the stir fried noodles are good.

The only complaint we have is that the non-dim sum items, like noodles and dishes, can be inconsistent in quality and taste. Our favorites, Singapore noodles and beef chowfun, are usually very good. However, a couple of time, they were mushy and beef was tough.

Service is barely OK. Wait staff always seem busy and ignoring customers as they walk by. Might be short staffed at times. Sometimes we share tables to shorten the wait.

Overall, we very much enjoy the food and are happy that Joyful is in the area.

I visited Joyful Garden for the first time ever on April 6, 2025, and it instantly felt like a place I’d been coming to for years. Located inside the Watertown Mall/Arsenal Yards, this classic Cantonese dim sum spot delivered on every level: warm service, authentic flavors, and a comforting, familiar menu.

Everything we ordered was exactly what I hoped for—and perfectly executed. The deep-fried taro dumplings had that beautiful nest-like crunch with a creamy savory filling. The shrimp rice noodle rolls (cheung fun) were soft and delicate, draped in just the right amount of sweet soy sauce.

My personal favorite? The fried shrimp and chive dumplings—crisp on the outside, packed with fresh chive and juicy shrimp inside. I also had the steamed shrimp and chive dumplings, and both versions were spot-on. These are the classics I’ve loved my whole life, and Joyful Garden does them right.

The restaurant was easy to get to by rideshare, and the drop-off was smooth—even during a busy lunchtime. The dining room is spacious, the dishes arrived hot and fresh, and the prices are very reasonable—especially for lunch. No surprises on the menu, just comfort and quality.

We’ve lived in the greater Boston area for over a decade, and without question, Joyful Garden is one of the best Chinese restaurants we consistently return to. In fact, today, Lunar Chinese New Year, felt like the perfect time to finally write this review.

We came in to celebrate and once again were reminded why this place is so special. The food is outstanding, authentic, flavorful, and with an incredible variety that keeps us coming back year after year.

What truly sets Joyful Garden apart, though, is the people. The owner and manager always make us feel like family coming home. The team has clearly worked together for a long time, and that continuity shows in the warm, attentive service. Over the years, we’ve celebrated so many family milestones here, and it has become a meaningful part of our traditions.

Updating my review:

Came back to my favorite Chinese restaurant. We ordered our usuals: West Lake beef soup, bok choy, and Yang Chow fried rice. But this time, we tried the sizzling steak with black pepper sauce. The steak was super tender, but the sauce was bland. We also ordered the double-cooked pork. This was good but not what I expected. It wasn’t made of pork belly and scallions. The sauce was bland and it was not spicy and mostly cabbage. The prices had gone up, and the portions seemed smaller, although the service remains good.

Joyful Garden Chinese restaurant is indeed joyful! We were seated quickly with a pot of tea. Service was friendly, and food came out rather promptly. We started with West Lake beef soup and it was amazing! Light and delicious, I must say it’s my favorite soup.
Then, we shared an order of salt and pepper shrimp and calamari, bok choy, and Yang chow fried rice; everything was delicious! But the highlight was the pan-fried flounder; I just couldn’t get enough of it, just quite pricey for $40.95 market price. Plenty of parking and a much better option than going to Boston. I can’t wait to go back!
