Golden Ambal is Edinburgh’s only restaurant offering authentic and homely style delicacies of both South and North Indian cuisine with out using any artificial colours or flavours and also offer South Indian’s favourite Indo-Chinese. Enjoy a choice of chilled beer or wine, in a beautiful and romantic ambience with relaxing soft instrumental music. We have successfully served Edinburgh for 5 years and believe the best meals are the home cooked one’s from mum’s kitchen. We have made the maximum effort to bring that authentic taste across the continent to the historic capital of Scotland.

I love a good curry and I’d never heard of the Golden Ambal, so I was keen to try it with friends. It’s tucked on a corner halfway down Leith Walk and easy to miss – we walked past it more than once trying to find it. The restaurant specialises in South and North Indian Cuisine and we were warmly greeted on arrival.

We were initially seated by the entrance, which doubles as a small bar and drop-in area for singles or diners passing by who want a no-frills, good curry. We were soon escorted downstairs to the main dining room, which was a little cold and largely empty at first but gradually filled up as the evening went on.

The standout here is the dosa menu, with at least 100 varieties alongside a vast array of other dishes. Add to that free BYOB with no corkage charge plus reasonably priced drinks and food, and it’s easy to see why it’s popular. Cobra on draft is £4.95 a pint, which puts many restaurants in Edinburgh to shame.

For starters, I had a couple of poppadoms and a pickle tray. A friend chose the Gobi Manchurian (£6.95), which arrived as a bowl of small crispy spiced cauliflower florets sprinkled with sliced spring onions. It was an absolute triumph. The dish looked almost Chinese in style, but the flavours were unmistakably Indian and absolutely delicious. I missed a trick in not ordering that for myself.

For my main, I had the lamb vindaloo (£14.95) with pilau rice (£3.95). I’d been warned it was spicy, and it certainly was! It was far too hot for me personally, but genuinely delicious with generous chunks of lamb in a rich ruby red sauce. The lamb wasn’t as tender as I would normally expect, but it was still very enjoyable and tasty. A fellow diner passed me a bowl of raita, which helped cool it down. I couldn’t have finished it without that, so it’s probably worth ordering a bowl to share with any curry.

Another diner had the butter chicken, which was spicier than expected but bursting with flavour, while someone else ordered a bhuna which they also said was hotter than anticipated but very tasty. The butter chicken would have been hot enough for me, and I like a hot and spicy curry.

It’s worth noting that the spices with the dishes are next level, with dishes that might normally be considered mild packing quite a punch and full of flavour.

No one opted for desserts, but the service throughout the evening was friendly, genuine and attentive. Golden Ambal is more of a functional, authentic curry house than a polished fine-dining venue, but that’s very much part of its charm.

The final bill for nine of us came to about £220. No service charge was added, but we happily left 10% without question as it was well worth it.

Despite the downstairs dining room being a little cold, I would happily return alone or with friends. The food, authenticity, prices and exemplary customer service make this a standout Indian restaurant in Edinburgh. Highly recommended.

Absolutely amazing experience! ️

I never expected to find such an authentic South Indian taste in Edinburgh. From the very first bite, it truly felt like home. The Gobi Manchurian, Chicken 65, and Fish Amritsari were incredibly delicious, full of flavor, and perfectly prepared. Every dish reminded me of the real taste back home.

The food was amazing, the flavors were authentic, and the whole experience was unforgettable. If you’re craving genuine Indian flavors while abroad, this place is a must-visit! ✨

I’ll definitely be coming back again

We are regular customers for dosas and starters and have always been satisfied with the meal. We went for first time since the reopening. The staffs were very friendly. We ordered 4 different types of dosa and chilli chicken and paneer starter and they were ok. Assuming because they just re opened and might take time to settle. But the garlic paratha was so bad. It was just a plain paratha with raw garlic crushed on top, and the murgh curry for £12.95 was the least expected.. it was just chicken in pepper sauce. Highly disappointed. Hope you work on the curries and improve.

Golden Ambal consistently delivers authentic, delicious food and their recent 1£ Dosa deal was no exception. Despite the low price ,the quality remained top-notch and the portions were just as generous as ever. Combined with incredibly welcoming service, the place is a must-visit.

Worst experience I never had in my life. Me and my friends ordered a dosa, it takes nearly 1.5 hour for one dosa, it’s not too crowded but they were making late. I don’t what happening. The Best don’t prefer this place …….

We ordered the egg fried rice, chilli chicken, and a Thali meal—all were full of flavor and really satisfying. The staff were kind and welcoming, which made the whole experience even better. Definitely a spot worth checking out!

We’d often visit Golden Ambal for having some nice dosa, idli and sambar vada. It’s pocket friendly. The staff has always been good. Overall the place has a sombre vibe, a bit under-lit, not sure why. It’s at a great location on Leith walk so for sure gets a lot of footfall. We try to stick to the traditional South Indian fare. The times we have tried the curries, they weren’t bad.

It was a nostalgic experience finding an authentic Kerala restaurant in the middle of Edinburgh, Scotland, on my birthday. Delicious food, impeccable service, and reasonable rates. The Malayali attendant (didn’t catch his name) was very helpful and did a great job! We had the non-veg thali, chicken biriyani, and porotta, all of which were delicious

Really chilled atmosphere with great staff .

I had the Vegetable Samosa to start and the onion Dosa which was a first time trying for me. They have 100 choices of Dosa here which I recommend trying.

My partner had the chicken 65 for starter and the chicken chettinadu for main . He loved both.

My daughter loved the rice , chips and poppadoms. ( queen of fussy )

Really lovely experience . Would visit again .

Food was incredible and atmosphere was nice but service was quite slow. We had to wait awhile for our food, water refills, and to get the bill. Overall, still a nice experience. Pictured are the mini masala dosa, fried squid rings, tikka masala, and butter chicken.
