Life Of A Nomad
Bagdad Café Route 66 Classic Stop | Newberry Springs, CA
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ A living piece of American road history!

Driving from Williams, AZ back to Los Angeles, we couldn’t resist stopping at the legendary Bagdad Café one of the most iconic Route 66 landmarks, made famous by the 1987 cult movie of the same name.

To our luck, the place was open and we were greeted by Barbara, a super friendly host who shared some stories about the café’s history. The atmosphere is pure classic Americana it feels like time stood still here. The wooden A-frame structure, vintage signs, and hundreds of flags and stickers from travelers all over the world make it an absolute treasure for photographers and Route 66 lovers. There’s also a souvenir corner with shirts, magnets, hoodies, and patches I grabbed a cool hoodie for $30, which felt like a great deal for such an iconic place.

Inside, the café is packed with nostalgic décor old memorabilia, a cozy bar, clean restrooms and even a souvenir corner with shirts, magnets, hoodies, and patches. There’s also a stage area with a drum kit and guitars, suggesting they sometimes host live music.

We were told the grill was temporarily out of order, so only drinks and fries were available, but honestly, we didn’t come for the food we came for the vibe, and it delivered.

️ A must-stop for anyone chasing the spirit of Route 66!
Perfect for photos, film nostalgia, and that timeless desert Americana feeling.
Free parking right out front.

Bagdad Café is a legendary Route 66 stop with a cinematic soul. It was made famous by the 1987 cult German-American film of the same name. This roadside diner offers a slice of cinematic history filled with memorabilia, signatures from global travelers, and a warm and welcoming vibe. The decor is delightfully eccentric with business cards on the walls, vintage photos, and a jukebox that still hums with desert charm. Whether you’re a movie buff, a road tripper, or just chasing the spirit of the open highway, this place delivers nostalgia. When I visited the Café, only coffee and non-alcoholic cold drinks were available. Andrea Pruett, the owner, is determined to keep the cafe open and running as a tourist attraction for photo opportunities, drinks, and souvenirs, allowing visitors to see the movie’s iconic interior.

This place isn’t really a cafe anymore. It was back in the 80s, but now it’s a souvenir shop. We just stopped by on our way to Pisgah Crater.
It’s a great spot with awesome Southern California vibes. The people working there were super nice and friendly.

Unfortunately this place was closed when we were here but for us it was still worth a stop to capture a picture of this quirky roadside attraction and to experience all of what we could of Route 66.

Bagdad Café is an absolute gem. We loved the vibe and, above all, the people running it — warm, welcoming, and clearly passionate about keeping this place alive. Walking in truly feels like a trip down memory lane, showcasing the once shine and joy that made this spot iconic in the first place.

There’s something deeply authentic about being here: the atmosphere, the stories in the walls, and the sense that this café still has so much heart. They’re currently working on bringing the kitchen back to life, and it’s absolutely worth supporting them in this effort.

If you appreciate history, character, and genuine hospitality, Bagdad Café is a must-stop. Supporting them now helps ensure this legendary place can fully shine again.

The Bagdad Cafe is back – 7am to 7pm hours. Mark has done a great job of restoring the old Route 66 & Movie landmark. If you saw what it looked like as the roof failed, it is simply amazing with all of the flags back on the ceiling and the walls look great. And the hospitality is second-to-none. Got my picture taken behind the counter and a souvenir postcard of myself along with my Route 66 socks. He said the bathroom renovation is nearly done. Kitchen is still closed. There is a GoFundMe to support the renovations.

Apparently a Route 66 historical attraction (it’s got its own wiki page). I visited first thing in the morning, so my review is just on the exterior aesthetics, which were cool

A good restaurant off the beaten path. Good buffalo burgers,my friends all loved them. Nice people working there. Can’t argue with the prices thats for sure. All the bikers I know that have stopped here for lunch,or dinner all say they where satisfied with the food and drinks. I don’t have any problem recommending this place to anyone looking for a good place to eat and enjoy themselves with friends.
