Classic old school place right near Catonsville, all wood burning stove with some delicious pit beef and pit turkey. I’ve never had pit beef before but this place was stellar and my friends loved it. They give huge portions especially for the fries and gravy. The sandwiches we got were great and you can ask how you want your beef either medium rare, medium, or well done. The sauces on the side such as the horseradish, tiger sauce (the best sauce) and their barbecue sauce are all worth getting as well. Highly recommend this place and just remember to bring CASH!

While this wasn’t exactly our thing, I have to give major props to this place for providing awesome service and a great experience to a non-local. I ordered a classic pit beef and a classic turkey, both topped “the local way,” as they described it. The sandwiches were fresh and offered a unique experience overall.
The only downside is that the bun gets soggy; toasting it might help it hold up better. Either way, this spot is definitely somewhere anyone should try if they’re in the area.

This is the most flavorful and juicy Pit Beef in town. In my opinion, it is the best! Quality is consistent every time, and I love that it is still a classic Pit Beef stand rather than a whole restaurant. It’s quick and easy that way. They shouldn’t change a thing…it is perfect! Just remember that it is cash only.

Pioneer Pit Beef sits behind a liquor store, has barred windows, and shares a parking lot with county and state road-crew trucks. That alone tells you most of what you need to know.
You order through a smoky window off a narrow, dim corridor. The place barely feels indoors. Last time I was there, the guy at the register looked genuinely cold. No one’s pretending this is comfortable.
The pit beef is excellent. Plain and simple. Fries are solid, portions are big, and it’s cash only. Given how stripped-down the place is, anything less than generous would feel like a ripoff—but they deliver.
If you’re putting together a pit beef list, this belongs on it. You can probably find something fancier. You’re going to have a hard time finding something better.

Great example of Baltimore pit beef. Small menu, pit ham and turkey available as well. Only open lunch hours, 1100-1700. I’ve driven by here a few times, easily seen from the intersection and today it was on my route between jobs.
Decent line when I showed up and an even longer line while I waited. I stood in line 20-25 minutes but once I ordered I revived my food in quickly. People ahead of me were ordering multiple sandwiches.
Loved the pit beef, would try any pit meat here. Cash only. Good rolls, decent condiment section. The regular size sandwhich is a filling portion of protein, the super looks like a good one to pick loose pieces off of.
Small no frills shack. There’s a reason the line is long.

Straight up good food. Quick service, cash only. Worth the 2.5 drive. Very unassuming building, but the food was perfect. The pit beef is the best I’ve ever had. Brought a cooler so I could the turkey too! Love the prices and easy to choose from menu.

I ordered the Pitt beef sub. It was fresh. You can customize by adding cheese, toppings and sauces of your choice. Fries are hand cut and delicious. Usually there’s a long line but I went this time around 4pm and there was no wait

I have been going to this pit beef place or years. Pit turkey on a sub roll with tiger sauce onions and BBQ sauce is awesome and a order of fries. Very reasonable price. Taste is very very good. Pit beef is good too. My lady loves this place glad she doesn’t live close by. She probably would eat there 2 or 3 times a week.

Full disclosure – I am not a pit beef fan. However, this place could make me change my mind. Give Pioneer Pit Beef a try!
**Cash Only**
I did read folks reviews and those who argue about “authenticity,” well, maybe inauthentic is the “secret ingredient.” The beef was well-seasoned, flavorful and moist. The fries were great. The service was a 10. Nice folks who work hard and care about their product.
