As a food enthusiast, I had high hopes given the Yelp Top 100 recognition, and I’ll be honest because I think the kitchen can do better. The hummus was lovely, but the chicken shawarma came out overcooked and dry, the falafel was harder than it should be, and the fries were overdone. Next time I’m going straight for the sandwich — I have a feeling that’s where it’s at!
For context on my baseline, I measure Middle Eastern food against Mazra in Redwood City — if you haven’t been, go. That place sets the bar for what this cuisine can truly be, and I’m sharing that not to be harsh but because I believe De Babel has the potential to play in that league.
I’m rooting for this place and would come back to give it another shot. Hey De Babel team — if you’re reading this, consider it a love letter with constructive notes. Show Noam this review for extra smiles! . #Yelp100
This was our first time at De Babel and wow, we ordered a lot and still had more food than we could finish. For a group of four, you truly only need one side of fries and one side of hummus to share. The portions are very generous.
We tried the tabouli, chicken shawarma, chicken tawook sandwich, chicken Caesar sandwich, plus sides of hummus and fries. Every single thing was delicious. Not one miss.
The gentleman who took our order was incredibly helpful since none of us had been there before. He gave great recommendations and helped us order the right mix of food.
We would absolutely go back, just way hungrier and probably ordering less next time… even though it’s hard when everything sounds so good. Highly recommend!
Very rarely do you find such a gem of a restaurant. Some of the best Shawarma we have ever had, juicy/moist/seasoned and so flavorful. Super flavorful meat and well spiced. Sauces made in house and excellent balance of flavor. The pita was a star as well. Flown in fresh from NYC, it was thick and fluffy and not soggy. The pita was excellent
Tabouleh was excellent as well. Hand chopped parsley, secret blend of spices, lots of lemon and well salted and finished off with tomatoes and onions.
Babaganoush was excellent too! Still a little chunky with a great balanced tangy profile. And came with the award winning pita.
Lastly, we got the rice pudding, tons of flavor packed in a bowl. Made in house scratch by the dad, this thing was sweet and flavorful mixed with cinnamon and a little rose water i think. Definitely the right way to finish off the meal
The father and son who run this shop do an absolutely stellar job. They are personable, friendly, and so welcoming.
Pricing is extremely reasonable too! Less than $15/meal.
The first time I went there, I had their chicken shawarma. It is the best chicken shawarma I have ever had. Their hummus is also among the best I have ever had. Everything tastes fresh. They also have great salads and sides. Today, I had their chicken tawook and their fries. Not only is their chicken tawook outstanding, but so are their fries. What I like about their fries is that they are not greasy.
While their food is fantastic, the best part about their food is their tahini ice cream. While I have only tried the vanilla and chocolate flavors, I find it unbelievable, to say the least. I can compare it favorably with my favorite ice cream places across the valley. Every time I get it, I always get the swirl, so I can have both flavors at the same time.
The atmosphere is excellent; it is a nice modern vibe, and they have plenty of seating in the restaurant as well.
The staff is friendly and accommodating, always ensuring you have everything you need. They also offer suggestions on what to order if you are unsure. Today, one of the staff members offered me a sample of their tahini ice cream. While I was unfortunately taking a break from sweets at the time, I nonetheless appreciated the thought. It is never easy turning down something so irresistible. I will definitely make sure to have some more of their tahini ice cream next time I stop by.
If you are looking for an outstanding Mediterranean and Middle Eastern restaurant, look no further. When it comes to Mediterranean and Middle Eastern food in Arizona, De Babel is the king.
The pita was okay, a bit fluffy but good.
The tabouli had way too much lemon juice. You can see in the photo.
The falafels were small but good.
Overall it was just okay. Not as good as Green Corner in Mesa in my opinion.
Food is amazing, staff is incredible and extremely friendly. I always load up so I have more food for later.
I’m especially addicted to their hummus, just make sure you order extra of their incredible pita!
