I recently visited Shumi Japanese Cuisine and tried their Teriyaki Salmon and Spicy Salmon Roll, and both dishes were absolutely delicious!

The Teriyaki Salmon was perfectly cooked — tender on the inside with a slightly crisp, flavorful glaze that had the right balance of sweetness and savoriness. The portion size was generous, and it came with fresh vegetables that complemented the dish beautifully.

The Spicy Salmon Roll was just as impressive. The salmon was fresh and buttery, with a nice kick of spice that enhanced the flavor without overpowering it. The rice was perfectly seasoned and held together well, showing real attention to detail.

The presentation was clean and elegant, and the staff were friendly and attentive throughout the meal. Overall, Shumi Japanese Cuisine delivers authentic Japanese flavors with high-quality ingredients and great service. Definitely one of the best sushi spots in town — I’ll be coming back soon!

Went with a small group for dinner. We made a reservation the same day. The atmosphere is friendly and comfortable. I really enjoyed the variety of the chefs choice sashimi and the fatty tuna poke tartare.

Food was very fresh and delicious and it comes out with really good timing, you don’t feel like you wait.
We came as a family but it’s also great for couples or small groups of friends. Second time coming and will definitely be back!

Very small pieces of sushi for for the omakase. Quality of the fish was pretty good though. And the appetizer and ramen at the end kept us not hungry. Service was not very good though. The staff all looked very indifferent.

Refined and reminiscent of NYC high end sushi houses. Sushi chefs work in white tiled corner where fish is stored underneath vs behind glass. Dishes are prepared and orchestrated like fine dining. What I enjoyed about the sashimi was that the fish was not over chilled which allows for the flavor to shine through. Bento boxes were much larger than I expected and the fry was near perfect w/o being excessively oily. Even the salad showed care and restraint by not being overly soy. With BYOB, perfect and note it does get busy so come early or late.

Don’t order ramen. I tried the so-called “Shumi ramen.” Bold name. Tragic execution. One sip and I was immediately transported—not to Tokyo, not even to a late-night izakaya—but straight to a college dorm at 2 a.m. where someone just tore open an instant noodle packet and called it a day.

Terrific place! The food is excellent, and the service is outstanding. I usually avoid busy omakase spots because they take too long between plates, but this place serves quickly without making you feel rushed. I recommend it to anyone who wants to try fresh sushi and seafood.

I’ve been coming to Shumi for years, and always enjoy the omakase, but they have really taken it to a new level! The last few years we found the omakase tended to be almost the same meal every time – it was still very good, but got a bit boring, and wasn’t really special. When we were deciding where to go for a birthday dinner, we ended up deciding to go to Shumi because we didn’t want to deal with Fort Lee traffic on a Friday night, and we’re glad we did!

This time, we were given a single piece of sushi at a time. This is what you typically expect from a high-end omakase experience, but was not what we were used to at Shumi, so it was a nice surprise. Our sushi chef (the waiter said his name was Bruce) was very friendly and told us what each piece was. At the end, he gave us the option of picking one of our favorites to finish the meal, but we went with his choice and it was a delicious uni and toro surprise.

We had a free omakase deal for the birthday (something we signed up for years ago, and they still send every year), so we were wondering if they would go with some lower value dishes, but that was definitely not the case. Honestly, this is probably the best omakase deal you will find at $140. It was just as great (maybe better) than others that have cost us $250.

One improvement: don’t make us use a QR code for the menu! I hate that this trend has stuck around after Covid. The website has a pop-up on it that wouldn’t load well enough for me to click out of. Luckily I already knew what I wanted, but it is not a great way to start the meal.
