Decided to goto the city for a day trip and ended up coming to union sushi for a Saturday night dinner. Immediately when we entered we were greated kindly and immediately seated to our table at the sushi bar where chef Toshi greeted us and gave us reccomendations on the menu which were excellent. Was great to watch him prepare everything while talking about the dishes. Would 100% recommend for their well thought out menu and service.

This spot offers a fun mix of sushi and grilled dishes, making it easy to find something for everyone. The rolls are fresh and creative, while the barbecue items add a nice twist to the menu. The atmosphere is lively and stylish, and the cocktails pair well with the food. It’s a great place for a night out with friends or a casual dinner date.

I came here for happy hour – lychee mule was a 10/10! I also really enjoyed the spicy tuna crispy rice. I will say the server was forgetful and not knowledgeable on the menu, but I will give her the benefit of the doubt and assume she is new. Overall, happy hour was pretty good and I will come back!

Overall this place was just okay.

Our service was pretty poor. Our server was nice, but the food came out extremely staggered and the staff seemed as if they didnt know what we ordered.

We ordered edemame to start out, and a few minutes later we were asked if we ordered a 2nd order which we had not. After a few minutes of ordering, I recieved one of my sushi rolls within a couple minutes, and we all received our food at different times, including the last person in our group to receive her food halfway through all of us finishing eating.

The sushi was just average. It was not worth the price compared to other sushi places – the sushi just did not seem fresh.

The first time and last time we were here was over a decade ago when this joint first opened up. It was one of the first Japanese robata grill joints in Chicago downtown and I remember our experience was good, nice ambient and sushi selections. I remember that I didn’t care for the ramen and there was really nothing memorable.
We decided to give it another try after all of these years, just to confrim the reasons why we haven’t been back.
The ambient is ok, much brighter then before, weird layout with tables and seats wrapping along the walls and that big pillar in the middle. The Saturday we were there, it was about 60% capacity, wasn’t busy.
The menu changed drastically, it used to be much bigger with higher end offerings, wine / sake paring and such, now it is just like a neighborhood sushi joint (I think that is what they going for now), the sushi was good, but for some reason, they were really wet, drenched in sauce (luckily they were light) and infused oil. Fresh fish. They took the ramen off the menu which was a bummer because that is the typical order at the end of the Japanese meal. The robata was OK. The skirt steak order has a good amount of it, very tender but it is missing the grilled flavor. The chicken thighs were a bit over cooked, dry. They only had 3 beers left on the menu.
The service was OK but the food came quite late considering their capacity that night. The robata came up first and we had to wait for the sushi, and we didn’t get our last orders of sushi even after we finished eating everything else, so we had to cancel the last orders and leave.
Again, nothing special and nothing memorable, the menu is too limited. It went from a high end date night joint to a screaming baby, bachelorette party neighbor joint. It is unfortunate.

If I could give this place 6+ stars I would. It was a beautiful representation of a nice modern look and gave the restaurant a warm home like vibe. When we first walked in they immediately took us up within a minute of getting there. They were so welcoming and after sitting down for a few minutes before even getting the food, my whole family said that they already liked it there because the service was so good. This place is perfect for all ages. Our waitress was perfect and she was super quick. The music was kid friendly and the restaurant had a dark look, so it felt cozy. Great for any occasion big or small and not extremely pricey either. When receiving the food and eating it, my mouth was in love. The presentation was awesome and the food was phenomenal. This is now going to be a go to place for everyone. Even the dessert was delicious. Highly recommend!

I’ve been meaning to review this restaurant but keep forgetting. Here goes. We absolutely look forward to dining here every time we visit Chicago. This is our go-to place. The various specialty rolls and sashimi dishes are great. Top it off with delicious BBQ skewers and some great sake and we’ve got an evening that everyone loves. The staff is friendly and efficient. It can get a little loud inside the restaurant at times but the noise level has not stopped us from coming here.

Had the 10-course, lucky they fit me in, i recommend calling in advance to check for availability. There was also a $40 five-piece daily. Thought the omakase and the service was good.

Good rolls, like the variety with skewers. Modern, interesting decor. Busy night, never saw our server after taking our initial order until we were able to flag them down for the bill.
