First time trying and as a person of Italian decent I was expecting more but left highly disappointed. The sweet tea was see through for $3.19 [even the waitress said it was the bottom of the container] and the soup, food, and bread was room temperature when it came to my table with my friends, who I took out to dinner. You just can’t beat the Gondolier in Athens, TN. It is a locally owned Italian Restaurant serving great pizza, pasta and sandwiches. Their lunch buffet includes a pizza bar and a salad bar. It is very popular with the locals. They have servers who have worked there for years and owners who are always present to make sure you have a good dining experience. The locals already know about this gem but if you are new to Athens or just passing through, give them a try. I promise you won’t regret it

A traditional style, quaint, Italian pizzeria with a full menu of classic items like lasagna, chicken Piccata, and more. Excellent staff, good food, and plenty of booth seating. It looks like there might have been a banquet room off the side, too. The fried mushrooms are hand battered and delicious. I also recommend the bean soup!

I’m used to the Gondolier in Midtown. I walked through the door. Someone yelled from across the room to find a seat. The menu was different. I ordered the gyro plate. We didn’t get the complimentary bread Gondolier in Midtown gives. They bring the worst gyro I’ve ever put in my mouth. My husband got chopped steak. He wanted a sirloin steak, was told it was too expensive for the restaurant to order. That was the strangest thing I’ve ever heard from a restaurant with STEAK on their sign. The chopped steak was horrible. The pita bread was old and hard. We ordered a pumpkin cheesecake. That was delicious. The food was the biggest waste of money.

I dined in. Chicken Marcella was none like I’ve ever had. Canned mushrooms, thick dark Marcella sauce that had no flavoring from the Marcella wine. The portion was large. definitely the worst I’ve ever had. The service was very slow.

Not sure what happened after COVID. The pizza is terrible, the sauce taste like pure nutmeg. We also ordered the sausage Stromboli, the peppers and onion were raw and the sausage was cold, ordered a kids chicken tenders and fries and I think we got tartar sauce with it instead of ranch? Or maybe the ranch was that bad…..

Ordered pizza from here many times pizzas excellent! The pizza lunch buffet not the same. Suitable if you’re not picky, but recommend sit down and order one. Salad bar great, people are great, highly recommend.

My recent visit was outstanding. I had a USDA choice ribeye steak that was flavorful, tender and cooked to perfection. For $3.99 the add on for the salad bar was well worth it; one of the best I’ve had with a great assortment of fresh veggies, salads and meats. The server Keela was super helpful, polite and friendly. I enjoyed the quieter, more relaxing seating in the back right.
