La Madeleine is a beautiful French bakery with a charming and inviting atmosphere. The service was very good; friendly and attentive.

However, the food itself was not amazing. The pastry were not heated up when served. Even after requesting them to be warmed, they still were not heated properly, which took away from the overall experience.

On a positive note, the hot chocolate was good and comforting.

Overall, it’s a lovely place to sit and enjoy the ambiance, but I do wish there was more attention to detail when it comes to serving the food as expected

Spacious, French-style bistro serving a variety of French pastries, baguettes, meals, and sweet and savory crepes. Nothing fancy, but the food was tasty and the service was friendly.
Aug2025: French dip sandwich, French onion soup and (French) crepe with Nutella and strawberries. All delicious!

I must admit I’m not very well first in French cuisine. But I’m glad I came here. I had the crepe stuffed with seasoned chicken. For those who aren’t well initiated in French food or even crêpes, what I had is close to an omelette, but so much fluffier and lighter. I generally think of crêpes being a dessert, as is common in Japan, but here it is an entrée as well. And it was very light and refreshing, something that hit the spot. The ingredients were fresh and although the taste didn’t blow me away, the tomato bisque soup I had did blow me away! It was incredible tasting! If you want something healthy and fresh, I think this is a good place.

I wish I could give more than 5 stars. The food was great but the service was above and beyond. Maybe we looked stressed, but Robert came to check on us at the table and asked if everything was okay. We told him we planned on leaving early to beat the snow because we had to drive home to PA but our car was stuck in the garage and they didn’t open until 9am. He said he could open the garage door for us so we boxed up our food so we could get on the road. I tried to tip him for helping us, but he refused to accept it and wished us a safe trip home. I just wanted to say thank you to Robert and let him know we did make it home safe. We will definitely stop by again next time we are in town.

We were in Old Town, Alexandria for the night time, “Holiday Parade of Lights”, Boat Parade. It was the end of the day with the annual Scottish Christmas Parade and bagpipes demonstration earlier that morning. It is a big weekend- with special events, people dressed in their kilts, Scottish drink & food, and even Scottish dogs.
It has been a special part of Old Town since, at least, the early 1980’s.
It was freezing cold outside and we had just spent an hour on the waterfront looking at the boats all lit up for Xmas. We decided to go to La Madeleine for dinner afterwards…..
There was a long line that we had to wait in for 35 minutes just to order. When we finally made it up to the front of the line, we found that there was only one employee there taking everyone’s order ! Where was the rest of the staff ???
Then, I had to wait 30 more minutes for my food. I had to go ask about it and was then told that my order was next. Meanwhile, I had a cup of the, “Parisian Hot Chocolate”. (I had wanted regular hot chocolate, but was told they were out of the chocolate syrup to make it).
The, “Parisian Hot Chocolate”, was supposed to come with special thick whipped cream, but they didn’t have any left. I decided to get it anyway…
Big mistake…. It was so bitter I couldn’t drink it ! I added lots of sugar and cream, but it was still too bitter. The whipped cream was just out of a can, so that didn’t help matters.
I had paid over $7. for this, “Parisian Hot Chocolate”, because it was made with Ghirardelli chocolate, was supposed to have the special whipped cream, a mini crossiant and strawberries. The crossiant was just a regular sized crossiant torn in half and there were no strawberries at all.
My question is- why wasn’t the Cafe better prepared for a big crowd of customers ?? It was a special event weekend- and this specific event, (the Scottish Xmas parade), happens every year. There is no excuse.
The Cafe could have had more employees working because they knew there would be more customers.
They also could have ordered more chocolate sauce to make hot chocolate because they should have anticipated that people would want more warm drinks when it is freezing cold outside.
I am very disappointed and will definitely NOT be going back to La Madeleine.

What a great place! I had a café latte and the Crêpe la Madeleine. Both were excellent! I didn’t get to try anything from the bakery/pastry counter, but everything in there looked delicious! Friendly staff, tasty food, fun French atmosphere. Parking in the area is tough, but there is a parking garage that is extremely affordable! ($1/hr or $5/hr for the day!) The entire area is quaint and historical, so come to La Madeleine and then spend the whole day in Old Town Alexandria! I’ll definitely be back!

EDIT: Went back! Enjoyed the food just as much as the first time! Found street parking a few blocks away, too. This time I got the chicken la Madeleine (on a plate, not a crêpe), and my fiancé got a chicken cesar salad. Both were very good! We got some of their mixed summer refreshers – delicious! – and I got a slice of coconut cake which was amazing!! Again, I highly recommend you stop in for a bite the next time you’re in Old Town Alexandria!

Disappointing experience. We have visited this location several times over the years and had enjoyed the ambience and the cuisine. Things have clearly changed. The food quality is not what it was. The staff were polite, but the service was very slow. There were two people trying to deliver food to about four tables while also trying to take orders and make coffee drinks. In short, they could not keep up. We ended up just going up and retrieving our food so it wouldn’t get cold(er).

If you’re looking for delicious food served with some French arrogance and a lack of patience, here’s your lunch spot.

Lots of seating, wonderful menu, an aggressive server WHO LACKS ALL PATIENCE KNOWN TO HUMANITY, followed up by a sweet cashier who greets you with “Bonjour…”

The cafeteria-like trays will give you a little time to see what some of the hot options are. But be ready to give the Soup Dictator your order without delay, or you will be pummeled with French impatience and exasperation.

Enjoy a little taste of France in Alexandria. Be sure to try the tomato soup.

Great place to have lunch, relaxed atmosphere, friendly staff, and great food. Not very crowded and I noticed a lot of people just reading a newspaper or a book. No rush here.
Update – Great place to get a warm meal during cold weather.
Update – enjoying rereading an old favorite while enjoying breakfast.
Clean restrooms and have not had a problem so far.
Update – ordered a chicken Caesar sandwich and for same reason got half a sandwich. At least they didn’t bill me for a full sandwich but still have to take a point off. Second time they messed up an order.
Last time I was here cashier corrected my order as I called American Breakfast a American country breakfast. I thought that is what it was called. This visit ordered an American Breakfast and got a sandwich. Really?
Miss the bookcases and artwork that were on the walls. I guess they wanted more light but kind of lost the atmosphere.

In my rating: clean & big dining room suitable for kids + extensive & inexpensive menu – could be crowded and as a result – slow service, some menu items (like quiche) just average.
Recommend: American Breakfast, Mushroom soup (seasonal during winter), butter croissant, eclairs.
Skip: quiche & pastry.
