Chef Luis Castro, Castro’s Restaurant is an album of memories. Having developed a love and respect of farm-to-table cooking at a young age while growing up in Bogota, Columbia, Castro’s Restaurant is an ode to his journey as chef and a reflection of his roots. Chef Luis started his career in the kitchen working as a cook in Columbia during high school. After a whirlwind of relocating in pursuit of growth, he found himself working in prestigious positions such as Executive Sous Chef for Morimoto Asia Waikiki and Chef de Cuisine for Michael Mina’s Stripsteak Waikiki. When his love and craving for the latin flavors he grew up eating overpowered his need to learn the next technique, he decided it was time to open a restaurant of his own.
Spacious restaurant with wooden beams and outdoor seating, whipping up Latin American fare.

Our first impression was lackluster. We were barely greeted by the woman behind the counter, who instead of asking if we had questions about the menu, and/or making suggestions, just stood there, and asked if he were ready to order. We weren’t expecting a lot just a smile perhaps and some suggestions. Not sure if she was having a bad day/moment but she was a bit cold and unwelcoming.
We ordered the French toast, traditional Cuban breakfast plate and a small potato salad. French toast looked amazing but was way too sweet and over sauced.
Too bad because the toast itself seemed well done but drowned in syrup.
Traditional Cuban breakfast plate was OK.
Sausage was tasty and egg was cooked just right. Potato salad was also OK.
Cubanito came to me not hot, so tasted meh.
Overall we were underwhelmed with the food and service. The ambience is nice with outdoor seating. Food came out fast. Maybe the sandwiches are better. Not sure we’ll be back to try them though. When we learned the owner wasn’t Cuban it added to the let-down experience.
We are from San Francisco where there are many excellent restaurants and perhaps our expectations are different.
Castro’s is a popular spot so it’s worth a try to see for yourself. We were disappointed.
Also the staff were nice enough to let us bring next door coffee to their table. Next time I’ll get coffee from Castro’s too .
