Aside from its magnificent castle, which dominates the its skyline, this city also boasts a vibrant Halal food scene, with a variety of cuisines and food destination spots.
For modern Indian food, there’s only really one place to visit, and that’s the multi-award winning Kahani, which recently won ‘Best in Scotland’ and ‘Kitchen of the Year’ Scottish Curry Awards 2025.
Being situated down the road from the famous Edinburgh Playhouse means that, in addition to their Lunch, Afternoon Tea, Party, and A La Carte menus, Kahani also offers a Pre-Theatre menu for £23.95 per person.
What makes this place so popular, however, is that, alongside its traditional Indian dishes and some robust Pakistani offerings, Kahani keeps things intriguing by incorporating some modern twists to its eclectic South Asian menu.
HALAL STATUS: Fully Halal food menu • BYOB
We ordered the Butter Chicken, Garlic Butter Naan, and Hyderabadi Lamb Biryani — and I have to say, having eaten at so many Indian restaurants, this was by far the best Hyderabadi Biryani I’ve ever had!
The service was excellent — the staff were super friendly, attentive, and very accommodating.
Highly recommended!
I’ll start with the positives. The starters are generous and ideal for sharing. One of our party ordered the chicken pakora (£5.95), which arrived on a silver tray with a spicy dip. The four marinated, deep-fried pakoras were excellent and easily the highlight of the meal.
It all went downhill from there. The organiser ordered a garlic chilli curry which simply didn’t taste right – in her words, the sauce tasted as though it had been scraped from the bottom of the pan. She returned it, but the replacement still tasted strongly of burnt garlic. She ate it, but was clearly disappointed, particularly as she has enjoyed good meals here in the past.
Another diner ordered a fish curry which he found overly salty, a comment echoed by others at the table. I ordered the king prawn kahani (£17.95) with pilau rice (£3.50), which I enjoyed but it wasn’t a showstopper – just a standard prawn curry and certainly not worth the money.
The restaurant was incredibly noisy and not that busy, which is quite telling for a Saturday night over the Christmas period. The group behind us that was creating the most noise left halfway through our night, so they turned up piped Indian noise through the speakers to replace the din.
We had the dubious pleasure of being assigned a waiter called Daryl, who exuded no charm whatsoever. He made it clear that he wasn’t interested in working that night, and every question was met with a curt response. Abrasive, ignorant, rude and simply not fit for purpose.
The final bill with no service charge came to £200 for eight of us, and his tip reflected his attitude – some loose change amounting to about £3. He would normally have got about £25 from us, but we all agreed that he didn’t deserve a tip.
There are plenty of good curry houses around Edinburgh (about 100 or so) that consistently deliver great food and customer service, so there’s no room for complacency.
I won’t return and I wouldn’t recommend this place to anyone.
Darryl served us and he understood our palate and suggested dishes accordingly….do visit if you are missing Indian food.
One more thing….Kahani is a BYOB place for Beer and Wine…feel free to bring in your preferred drink
