The building doesn’t look like much from the outside but it’s perfectly fine on the inside. We were seated quickly and service was super friendly and prompt.
The waitress was able to make suggestions. I ordered the flounder, my daughter the shrimp & grits. Portions were large and we enjoyed it. The fish was well cooked and flavorful. The slaw was homemade. I sampled the shrimp & grits and it was a winner.
I would go back but since I’m rarely there, I would probably try another seafood place searching for that seafood perfection.
My husband has managed restaurants for years and we have dined out plenty.
Bring cash to save money as they have prices for cash buyers.
Amazing crab cakes (super fresh and light), shrimp/chicken gumbo, mullet (lightly breaded and fried), redfish and the triggerfish was seasoned to perfection.
Everything we tried was amazing, great prices, small family owned and cozy.
Man we stopped at two other downtown restaurants and the wait was an hour on a holiday weekend so we decided to take a chance on this hole in the wall spot. I’m so glad we did. We will definitely be back and will tell all our friends.
The waiting area was kinda nonexistent so they do need to work on that. I could tell the line was not customary. But it should be.
You will be glad you stopped here.
Please tip your server 15-20%.
Shrimp & Grits – $19.75. The shrimp & grits were excellent. The grits were cheesy enough to add flavor but not so much that they felt heavy or greasy. The sausage and shrimp added bursts of savory flavor with each bite. Highly recommended.
Seafood Gumbo (bowl only) – $11.50. Served piping hot with an excellent seafood flavor that blended together perfectly. It was very salty but also very tasty. If it was less salty, it would be a perfect bowl of gumbo. Still, I’d get it again.
Fried Mullet Dinner – $15.95. The fried mullet was good. It had a fine, stringier flesh with some chew compared to cod or even catfish. The flavor was good—not muddy like some catfish can be. It was served as individual filet portions and a separate backbone. They were all breaded in cornmeal and deep-fried. Served with tartar sauce and a lemon wedge. After eating the fillets, I ate the backbone by removing a sliver of the edge (which had small pin bones) and pulling the meat off the spine.
Hushpuppies (side). Amazing. They had a thin, crispy crust and a soft, fluffy interior with bits of sweet corn kernels and red peppers. They tasted like seafood and were wonderful overall.
Fried Okra (side). Tender and crunchy with no stringiness.
Mixed Vegetables (additional side) – $3.25. Likely boiled or steamed. The cauliflower was mushy and bland but went great with the salty gumbo. The broccoli stems at the bottom of the bowl had more flavor, seasoned with lemon pepper.
Overall, everything tasted good, and the variety of flavors worked well together. I would definitely jump at the opportunity to eat here again.
Note: They charge an additional 4% if you use a credit card.
I accepted the fact they started charging me extra to use a credit card even though I don’t like it (their merchant settlement fees are part of doing business, always have been). I accepted the fact their prices got higher due to inflation, even accepted my fried trigger dinner went from 2 pieces of fish to 1 even though being charged a bit more. Where I have a HUGE issue is the carry out fees that I was told was for the styrofoam container and plastic eating utensils. I was surprised to see almost $9.00 added to my carry out order for 2 meals. You can purchase 200 styrofoam trays on Amazon for about .20 each, 100 packs of eating utensils with fork, spoon, knife, napkin, salt and pepper for the same .20 each. If I am taking home to eat I do not even need the utensils. Now, if you eat at the restaurant and get box to go for leftovers there is no charge (I don’t think), how does that make sense?
That being said, we will still eat there because we love the food, it just will not be as often as we used to, it is just too expensive. They will never be my option for carry out again.
On a side note, my sister ordered a gallon of greens from them for Thanksgiving and was at first charged $100 but before she left the owner gave it some thought and decided that was a little too high and reduced to $75. To me that still seems high for greens.
Great food, love them but they are crazy with their prices.
