The American is a barcade/sports bar and events space located at the intersection between Mount Pleasant, Strathcona and Chinatown in Vancouver, BC. We have an open concept, communal space with a mix and mingle atmosphere that is perfect for groups both large and small. The bar carries a variety of local craft beer, natural wines and delicious cocktails and mouth-watering food is served up by DownLow Burgers. We host a variety of weekly events including trivia, music bingo, and karaoke and we always have the big game on our projectors/numerous TV screens. We also have a craft beer and natural wine store located at our front entrance.

The smashburgers are good here. Juicy, yet crispy on the outside. Lots of varieties to choose from. Tried the BFM 9000 and it was a heaping mound of greasy but tasty beefy deliciousness which tasted like a Big Mac on steroids. The French Onion burger was also very tasty and juicy. The Caesar salads are also above average as they make their own croutons that taste great. The place is pretty big and has games you can play too.

Coming here for replay Wednesdays from the pinball community. The staff is very friendly, chatty and knowledgeable about the world. For my taste the gin collection lacks. Haven’t really tried other alcoholic beverages.

I was craving a smash burger, and remembered The American having decent burgers. I also love onion rings,so definitely wanted to upgrade to those as my side. Between onion rings, extra cheese and and extra patty, this turned into a 30$ burger. No biggie, right? Let’s pay for the extras and get a super tasty burger! The reality was I got four ( yes 4) onion rings, and a small sad looking burger. When I questioned the person serving me, I was informed that four was the correct portion size. Burger was tasty, but kinda pathetic given the cost. And four onion rings.

We haven’t dine in but the place by itself is very welcoming and cool. I’m sure the food is great and planning to come back to try it. You can come and watch a game, they also have a Photo Booth, bar, pool and more. Recommend to visit

The smash burgers here are solid. However, they’re a bit on the pricey side considering the portion size and what other smash burger spots in town offer for a similar or lower price. Worth trying, but not the best bang for your buck.

The burgers are good but the kitchen hours are inconsistent and they advertise deals they don’t really honour. Kitchen closes at 10? Last call was actually before 9:30. $10 burgers after 10? Not on a Friday. I always feel lied to.

This is a sketchy area with a lot of characters one needs to avoid, especially near the Pacific Train station and the park. But once you get inside here it’s all good. As I entered the waitress greeted me. Took my name and number. Seating is pretty much high wooden stools and tables which could be uncomfortable for some. But they are well spread out and high partitions between each.
Ordered the Blue Buck Pale Ale on special (they have 5-6 beers on special every day $2.50 off). The breakfast burrito was also on special (rotation menu every day as well) but I settled for the crispy cauliflower. It was done to perfection and the house gochujang/yogurt dip was hot but delicious
The pinball machines are interesting. Washrooms in the basement are clean and well stocked. Will definitely recommend for friends and also families.

Monarch burger (only from 5pm – 11pm): Best burger in town!!! Juicy burger, excellent bun, yummy fries! You can also have a grilled cheese bun instead of regular bun, which makes it massive (or amazing, according to my partner). The place is awesome, there’s pinball, pool table and other games. We tried to go there on Friday night (8h30pm) and the place was packed, came back on Saturday at 6h30pm an there were some tables available – all of the tables in the centre were reserved, though.
