Manhattan Deli – The BEST DAMN DELI IN DES MOINES.

Got the NY Pastrami and boom I am in tastebud heaven. Dreamed about this all night, that warm pillowy soft marble rye piled high with that delicious NY Pastrami, pickles, and mustard. Just pure perfection and joy in the flavor combination, everything is hitting just right. The NY Pastrami is so flavorful and satisfying. Just tastebud heaven.

My Beautiful Wife got the Zach Johnson or #3. Hoagie with ham, hard salami, pepperoni, provolone, hot pepper cheese, lettuce, tomato, onion, mayo, oil dressing, added banana peppers. I had a bite and can say this is my favorite cold sandwich here. It’s definitely a solid sandwich.

We split the #1 with ham, cotto salami, bologna, American cheese, lettuce, tomato, onion, mayo, oil dressing on a hoagie bun. Definitely another great sandwich.

I don’t think there is anything on the menu that’s not delicious. I stayed away from the Chocolate Chip Crack Cookie, but it was so hard leaving without one.

Don’t forget a pickle spear as a perfect end to a fantastic delicious flavor festival of a lunch. Just amazing food from an Amazing Authentic Deli.

Everyone here was really friendly and handled our order expertly. Sandwiches were satisfying and the decor had a unique curated vibe that feels quintessential to an authentic Italian deli: Brought my mom here, and she quite enjoyed a taste she could connect with from way back when. Looking forward to coming back!

I’m really disappointed. Since owner ship has changed they should call it Des Moines deli home of the soggy sandwich. I’ve come here for 15+ years and I’m saddened it is not like it used to be. It has subway style decor that looks like it was bought from target. My sandwich was warmed inside the styrofoam container and was soggy. The cashier even told the man preparing my food, “hey styrofoam doesn’t go in the microwave” as he proceeded to laugh it off. I hope
They can get it together sooner than later. As you can hardly tell in the picture bc I was driving. Both ends of the sandwich were soggy so I ate the middle. You can also see the melted container…leaching harmful chemicals into my food.
And I also miss the giant aerial photo of downtown Des Moines.

Hansen’s Manhattan Deli absolutely lives up to its reputation as the best deli sandwich in Des Moines. The quality is outstanding – fresh ingredients, excellent bread, and delicious sides that complement the sandwiches perfectly.

Located on Ingersoll Avenue with limited parking in the rear lot, so plan accordingly. They’re only open for lunch and typically close around 3pm. The line can get long during peak hours, but it moves steadily and the wait is worth it. They offer takeout if you’re in a rush (call ahead to skip the line), though no delivery is available.

If you’re looking for an authentic deli experience in Des Moines, this is the place. The awards are well-deserved.

Vintage interior with large selection of fresh made sandwiches! I got the #1 and wish it had more mayo and tanginess of the dressing; otherwise it was tasty! My partner got the Manhattan corned beef and ham, coleslaw on an onion roll.

This is one of my favorite lunch spots! This place is your small old fashioned sandwich shop atmosphere. There are usually lines but service is efficient and friendly. You can order ahead and talk to the sweet older lady at the end of the line. She always makes me chuckle at her wonderful customer service that is just as antique as the atmosphere. I love the sandwiches! Every sandwich I order is so flavorful and fresh! The only thing I dislike is the lack of parking. Very good overall though!

Got the Veto And the Mamma Mia Both were solid 3.5/5 especially for Iowa can’t complain! Would definitely come back! The peanut butter brownie is top-tier that’s my reason for the five star!

It was OK. Some inconsistencies with the temperature of the meat. As a warm sandwich there were multiple cold bites.

I ate here often when I worked in the neighborhood, but I’ve only been back twice since. The Vito with mixed peppers was my go to. So good! But the Italian roast beef isn’t tender at all anymore…maybe it needs a longer cooking time? I used to get the quick and easy smoked turkey sandwich pretty often too, but they only have regular turkey now; soooo….movin’ on.
