Reviews
Café Trio has long been a Kansas City favorite, beloved for its vibrant atmosphere and consistently delicious food. With its recent partnership with another restaurateur, however, the menu has taken a noticeable turn — one that feels quite different from the classic Trio experience many of us remember.
The food was good, though not quite as exceptional as it once was. What hasn’t changed is the outstanding service and the always-festive seasonal decor — the Halloween setup, in particular, was fantastic.
Rumor has it the restaurant may even undergo a name change in 2026, so now may be the time to savor the familiar ambiance and thoughtfully curated wine list before this local icon evolves into something new.
Nestled among the bustling streets of Kansas City, MO, Cafe Trio is truly a hidden gem that deserves recognition. From the moment you step inside, you’re greeted with a warm and inviting atmosphere that sets the stage for a delightful dining experience.

So BOOM…(that’s me!)
It’s New Year’s Eve, right? And I decided I’m gon’ pull it together, okay after a long day of trying to get the right fit for the night!!! I’ve been in my feelings, but I said, “Nope. We still cute. We still stepping out.’
I put on my outfit, my husband looking good, I’m feeling… 87% confident — and that’s a WIN for New Year’s Eve. We head to Café Trio on the Plaza, the one that screams, ‘Look but don’t enter, every time we walk by.
Tell me why…
The decorations are giving Magical Winter Wonderland meets Gatsby. I’m excited. I’m thinking, Oh, they did this for US, ME cause it’s all about me tonight right? That’s when the record scratched. Silly me.
Scene 1
We sit down… and here we go sitting baby in the corner with no view of all the spectacular decor!
It was like it was intentional or poorly thought out. I’ll let you decide.
Scene 2
Our server Hannah comes over giving energy like she just clocked into a shift she didn’t apply for. Not a smile, not a Happy New Year, not even a fake hi guys, or hello. It was like we completely disturbed her evening. A slamming of plates and here’s your water now what do you want type action. Like excuse me Hannah, you’re employed, it’s New Year Eve and at your prices tonight surely you are making great tips!!!
But okay.
I try to be positive. I’m thinking, Maybe she’s shy. Maybe she’s tired. Maybe she not interested in serving us, but I came with great energy and I won’t be defeated, not tonight!!!
Nope.
Sis stayed dry MOST the night until the very end. When I confirmed her name of course. If the service had been any drier, we would’ve needed chapstick AND humidifiers to go with the water.
Scene 3
Then the food comes out, right?
Four courses for $650 (party of 4) PLUS a $50 deposit.
Baby…
For that price, I thought I’d meet God on course three. Instead… I met disappointment wrapped in garnish.
Scene 4
Just before Midnight hits — they hand out party favors.
Cute… UNTIL MINE BROKE.
I said, “Oh so y’all consistent-consistent.”
Scene 5, the SUSPENSE !!!!
HERE’S the moment… cause I’m still hopeful, see that’s the naïveness in me! Yep made the word!!! Anyway, I ask a gentleman politely after he finished with a table on our way out, “Can you take a picture of me and my husband?”
Baaaaaaby,
This man looked at me and said, “Let me find someone who’s not busy.’ It gave alllllll of “get someone else to do it”.
Excuse me sir, YOU had no idea the impact, the awkwardness, the bad taste that had in my mouth to an already sour evening that I’m still trying to make delightful on my own. You literally had ONE job: tap, tap
But NO.
He walked ACROSS the restaurant like he was on a mission from God and INTERRUPTED a young lady in the middle of HER conversation like:
“Hey, go take their picture.”
I stood there like:
“Is this candid camera? Am I being Punk’d? Did Ashton Kutcher come out of retirement???”
At that point, I said:
‘Oh, Café Trio don’t want our kind. Got it. Message received.’
I survived second guessing many fits for the night to give it my all because I just don’t do upscale bougie and dragged myself out the house feeling fabulous and THIS is the energy they gave me?
Honestly…
I should’ve just stayed home, ate leftovers, and watched the ball drop in peace.
At least my couch knows how to treat me.
Café Trio gets zero stars, one broken party favor, and a bill for wasting my New Year’s Eve energy!
End Scene
Now let me code switch for you….. because maybe you will understand this better.
As a paying customer investing in a premium holiday dining experience, the overall lack of hospitality diminished what should have been a memorable celebration. I recommend staff training focused on equitable, attentive service.
Sincerely,
A Disappointed Guest
