We have been patronizing El Campesino on McKnight Road in the North Hills for many years. In all of those years that we have dined there, we have had only one (1) unsatisfactory dining experience, but we kept on patronizing this location because the food was spectacular. We had dined there on 05-Feb-2026, and we were so underwhelmed by the experience. The food prices went INCREDIBLY HIGHER than they previously were, and the portions were INCREDIBLY REDUCED. I paid over $20+ for 2 very thin chicken cutlets that were smaller and thinner than a McDonald’s chicken sandwich. Thinner than a single chicken McNugget! My dining companion had a $20+ shrimp dish that was more of a scoop of minced tomatoes and roughly 5 very small shrimp. Even the beans and rice sides were significantly reduced. We ordered the ceviche appetizer that we’ve enjoyed so many times previously. I paid $14.99 for a small bowl of VERY SMALL minced tomatoes, onions, less than a teaspoon of very minced celantro a taste of lime juice equivalent to the size of lime that accompanies a Corona beer in most every establishment that sells them, 2 large but thin slices of cucumber that were never an item in the dish before, about 4 thin corn tortilla chips spread around the bowl that also were never on the dish before, and the shrimp were minced from no more than about 3 medium sized shrimp all in a bowl that appears to have been intended to make the whole presentation appear “bigger.” We decided to have the sopapillas dessert, and for $7.49 we received 4 tortilla chips on a small plate with literally a teaspoon size of vanilla ice cream and almost the same amount of melted whipped cream. These were not the worst of the dining experience. The worst part came with the check total. Only after the check was printed and we had handed over a debit card without looking at the check and it was brought back to us to sign did we find out that we were charged an extra $3.15 for having paid with a card! NOWHERE did it say that there was an extra fee for using a credit/debit card. Nowhere on the check itself, nowhere on the menu, and nowhere on their website as we checked thoroughly. We understand that businesses are increasing their prices due to the worst economy in US history, but this purchasing experience was like “armed robbery!” $8.90 for one draft beer and $3.38 for a glass of warm iced tea with no more than 5 small ice slivers is outrageous. We will think twice about returning to El Campesino at any location. Absolutely disappointing. The money was no problem at all, it was the deceptive delivery of their inflation. We expect better for a $100 dinner!

Genuinely my favorite spot for Mexican food in Pittsburgh! The quality of the food is fantastic and consistent, and the service is great. Massive bonus points for the fact that when ordering stuff on DoorDash they package everything in a way that the Tacos were fresh even after a 30 minute delivery!!

Not bad food & would like it to be a littlebit more temperature hot. Took a little bit of time to order even though there were only 3 other tables at 1 pm. Carnitas Dinner had a ton of onions so next time I’ll order with poquito cevoias.

It was a nice clean restaurant, nice waitress. Mediocre food. The food is way overpriced. I had 2 pitchers of beer, each for $25! I don’t mind paying but the total bill for the little food we ordered was wild. The thing is, if they had more reasonable pricing, I’d be back and support but not in this economy with those prices.

Fairly decent but pretty standard Mexican food. Place gets crowded. Kitchen is very fast once you get your order in, but getting seated and served can be slow. Same with getting a drink refilled. Special drinks are high-quality — they do not skimp on the top shelf tequila and other liquors. Beer selection is just okay.

It hit a special spot. Everything was just cheesy, well-seasoned, and filling. Also the first place I’ve had in months that has a good chile relleno and didn’t have random vegetables in the rice. Great service too, definitely try this place.

A FOODIE’S DELIGHTFUL ENJOYMENT OF AUTHENTIC MEXICAN CUISINE , all food cooked to order. None of those fast food tacos and wraps made with bottled red sauces and dead grated yellow cheeses.

The restaurant itself has a lovely ambience. The staff are very courteous and attentive.

The menu clearly has all the ingredients of the tastes of Mexico : Corn tortillas, green and red chilies, white (not black) beans, fresh white cheeses (queso fresco, not yellow processed cheese-like products) , guacamole salads, and flavorful Mexican rice. For alcohol, there’s a selection of Mexican beers and cocktails made with premium tequilas and mezcal.

Choose from any of the Parrilla Campesina , which highlight entrees of grilled meats mixed with al dente vegetables that are very juicy and perfectly cooked with simple seasoning. None of those thick sauces (usually from a bottle) used commonly by fast food joints and fake mexican eateries. For the uninitiated, go for the Cazuelda. It’s the best example of unadulterated Mexican food one may ever taste in America.

Choose also from the Especialidades for classic Mexican favorites, such as Mole, Tamales, Flautas and Chili Rellenos.

And also from the Enchiladas for classic Mexican flavors: try the Verde, Mole, or Mexicana. You’ll never go back to the fast food ones .

BTW, always always choose the corn tortillas NOT the wheat flour ones, the latter apparently is being (reluctantly) offered a choice as it’s a familiar one to some people.

For those who somehow prefer the familiar burritos and some of enchiladas, which are Cal Mex and Tex Mex NOT authentic Mexican, there’s a small selection. SURPRISINGLY, this place manages to elevate these American inventions with true Mexican flavors. While I’m not a fan of the four tortilla, go for the California Burrito, it’s as good as one might savor in food stalls in metro San Diego.

Pittsburgh has clearly a great place for Mexican dining. Enjoy

Always delicious! The chicken salad is excellent. I am on a special diet, and they always accommodate. The chicken was very delicious. The salsa is fresh and tasty. My guest had tacos and chips an reported that her meal was excellent. The servers are ways ultra friendly. We highly recommend El Campesino for lunch and dinner. The service is fast. We never have to wait for our meal. The process are extremelyaffordable. Definitely put this restaurant on your list of stops!

Entered on christmas eve to find ceiling fans on full blast and no one to greet us. After about 5 minutes someone came to seat us – the place had maybe 4 other tables. The harsh cool white lighting and overly loud music made for a lousy atmosphere. 3 beef tacos which were notjing but watery ground meat soaked my soft tortillas to mush. I ate some meat which was tasteless. Sadly, we were so hungry we didnt leave upon arrival. Last time there.
