Fumo on Amsterdam Ave and 137th Street is, without a doubt, a must-visit culinary destination in Harlem. My recent dinner here with my wife was nothing short of exceptional, offering a perfect blend of great atmosphere, attentive service, and truly amazing food.
From the moment we walked in, the atmosphere was vibrant yet cozy, setting the ideal stage for a memorable night out. The energy is fantastic without being overwhelming, making it a perfect spot for either a special occasion or a casual weeknight treat. The service was equally good—our server was helpful, prompt, and genuinely friendly, ensuring we felt welcomed and well-cared for throughout the meal.
The true highlight, however, was the food. I ordered the classic Spaghetti Carbonara and it was sublime. The sauce was rich and creamy, coated the perfectly al dente pasta, and was exactly the comforting, authentic dish I was craving. The Garlic Bread served alongside was crisp, buttery, and the ideal accompaniment.
My wife opted for the Penne alla Vodka and was equally impressed. The sauce achieved that perfect balance—tangy from the tomato and decadent from the cream—a clear testament to high-quality ingredients and skillful preparation.
Fumo offers a complete and unforgettable dining package. If you’re in the area and looking for high-quality Italian cuisine that backs up its reputation, stop searching. This place is an absolute gem.
Highly, highly recommended!
We were promptly seated inside and served shortly after. The first server, Steven, took our drink orders and gave us a little time to peruse the menu. We ultimately chose a rigatoni bolognese (friend’s daughter), a penne vodka with meatballs (friend), a naked penne vodka for my mom and I had a spaghetti vongole. For drinks, my mom and I each had a raspberry lemonade and my friend and her daughter had a Fumo mocktail and a coke, respectively.
Now after enjoying our meals, two other servers came and we requested extra bread from one and he never brought it, even after asking an additional time. Steven immediately brought it right after we were able to get his attention. Also while busting the table, the other server from the two mentioned earlier, reached across without asking for clearance which rubbed us all the wrong way because he passed really close to my face.
This turned us off from tipping extra because the service was not great and I just thought I should make a note of it but other than that, everything else was good to go. I’ll be back to try the brunch and other menu items.
After being seated, we waited approximately seven minutes without being acknowledged—no water, no greeting, nothing. Meanwhile, a guest who arrived after us and was seated next to us was immediately attended to. She received her wine before we received our drinks and her food before we received our appetizer, even though we were clearly there first.
When I politely addressed this with the server, she appeared frustrated that I spoke up about the lack of service. The situation made me feel unwelcome, especially given that this occurred during Black History Month. My waiter never came back. Fortunately, another waiter, Miguel, completely turned the experience around. He was attentive, professional, and ensured that the remainder of our visit was pleasant. His service was greatly appreciated.
While the food was excellent and the drinks were good, the overall experience left a lasting negative impression. Due to how we were treated, I would not return. I strongly encourage management to ensure staff are properly trained to provide respectful and equitable service to all guests, regardless of race.
His service truly made our experience even better. People like him really make a difference. Thank you, Erick, for such a special and outstanding service!I want to leave an amazing review for Erick Castillo. He was our waiter and honestly made us feel so well taken care of from the very beginning. He was kind, attentive, and professional, always paying attention to every detail and maintaining such a great attitude!
That said, I’ve noticed something that detracts from the experience. The owners are often present, which is usually a positive sign, but they come across as surprisingly impersonal. On a recent visit, one stood near the kitchen the entire time without once engaging with guests or checking on how things were going. Another lingered near the hostess stand, and when we left, neither acknowledged us or thanked us for coming. It’s a small gesture, but a warm goodbye or thank you goes a long way in making patrons feel appreciated—especially when it comes from ownership.
Also, I have to mention the bread situation. It’s a bit baffling that warm bread isn’t offered, especially considering how many guests have apparently expressed the same frustration. It’s a simple touch that most diners expect and appreciate.
Fumo has so much going for it, and with a little more attention to hospitality and guest feedback, it could elevate the experience even further.
