We happened to be one of the first few people in after they had just opened so we were able to be seated right away & order drinks. They hand out paper menu’s, but they are a little weird as they aren’t stapled together so it can be a little confusing when looking at them because it seems like a page or two was missing. Looking at their online menu it looks like there are several items online that weren’t on the paper menu in restaurant.

We also never received any kind of drink menu, so when my husband & my dad went to order their drinks and asked if they had margaritas we figured they would let us know what kind, but they didn’t. They ended up getting a prickly pear margarita as I asked if they had them because I know it is my dad’s favorite. Being as we didn’t get a drink menu means the prices for the drinks were also unknown. They ended up being $16.50 each.

Since we were one of the first few there, it honestly didn’t take too long to get our food. I’d say maybe 15 to 20 minutes. Long enough for my mom and my daughter to run to the bookstore around the corner while we waited. The food portions are slightly small for the price, as some others had mentioned almost $20 for four small street tacos seems a bit high. But thankfully we all thought the dishes we had selected were delicious and we really enjoyed the sauces that came with the dishes.

It also didn’t show on the menu or anywhere I can find on their website that there is a “large party” fee automatically added. (we are a party of six) so we didn’t know until we looked at the bill that they tacked on $40 for a “large party fee”. Ended up coming out to $240 total.

Atmosphere wise they had some decent music playing and the setting felt intimate and cozy inside, felt like an old school pub.

If you’re looking for fast, delicious Mexican food, do NOT come here. It took us 20 mins to get drinks (just water btw), 40 minutes to get our appetizer (good chips but barely melted cheese, scant ingredients with subpar salsas), and 1 hr & 15 mins for our two entrees to arrive. At that point, we were throughly hangry, annoyed, and ready to leave and we left our food mostly untouched as it truly did look appetizing. We ordered a simple side of beans & that never even came. Idk if there was smth going on in their kitchen or they forgot to put in our order but 10/10 do not recommend.

We visited for dinner while in town. It’s a little off the beaten path which did make it less crowded.

Service was friendly and helpful. They checked on us and kept drinks full.

We started with chips, salsa, and guacamole. I didn’t care for the chips. They were thick, soggy and bland. The salsa had good flavor. The guacamole tasted pretty good but was too thin and runny.

For dinner I tried the mole enchiladas. It was only ok. I’ve had better mole. It didn’t have much heat and I’m more used to a richer flavor. The portion of chicken was fairly small. I also didn’t care for the rice.

Others at the table had the tacos and loved them. They particularly enjoyed the vegetarian and tofu tacos.

Atmosphere was ok. It’s pretty inside with nice big windows to the street. They had some music playing so it felt like a party. Overall it wasn’t too noteworthy.

When you think of a family owed restaurant in Santa Fe with traditional Mexican food fused with the local southwest flavors, this embodies all that is delightful to your palette. Standing at the bar, listening to the history of how the restaurant came to fruition made me appreciate the cuisine that much more. The tacos were such a delectable delight, especially to have the burst of flavor from the grilled pineapple mixed with the spicy salsa. I’m in food coma heaven.

AMAZING PLACE!!! Don’t be fooled by the keyboard critics, Kevin and his team made us some of the best food I’ve had in years ! After a long drive they made us feel welcomed like I was in their home town in Mexico, it’s a shame they’ve been getting put down by wanna be food critics ! If you are in Santa Fe I urge you to go in and have a phenomenal experience with great margs and even better food, p.s. price was more than reasonable for being right by the historic Santa Fe plaza !

Had very high expectations coming in and unfortunately I felt it mostly missed the mark. It wasn’t too busy but our food took forever to come out. We both ordered tacos. I got the carne asasa tacos and the meat was incredibly tough and at times uneditable. Which is a shame because the tortillas and the sauces that came with it were outstanding. But the steak was brutal. My side of rice was also hard as a rock… The price was very high for not being right in the main part of town.

Stopped in on a whim for dinner and we were able to snag a seat the bar. Cocktails were awesome and the food was insane. I think it was the best quesadilla I’ve ever had!

We arrived at about 8:00 on the 18th of February to celebrate our friend Laura’s birthday. Our server wasted no time giving our party of three, the best service we could have hoped for. From a birthday shot for the birthday girl to the amazing entrees (I had their tortilla burger with green chili) We could not be more satisfied. The final dish was a desert that did require a spoon for each of us. Bunuelo ice cream Sunday. Absolutely amazing.

If you are a local. Do make it a point to drop in sometime. If you are visiting? Put El Callejon on your list of must haves. You will not be disappointed.

A MUST for authentic Mexican food.

Update from 12/5/23. The service could have been so much better it really was a let down as was the cleanliness of the dining area. With gnats flying around and the walls could be cleaned. Luckily my companion washed his hands in their kitchen sink and noted on how clean it was in the kitchen- which was a relief because I was seriously questioning that after the dining room appearance. The service could have been better too. But this is the kind of place where all those concerns go out the window cause the food is that damn good! This time we had the chicken quesadilla and cheese enchiladas. All worth it.

I order the flight of tacos : 3 tacos of my choice, a side of black beans and a small helping of slaw. (The corn tortillas are house made!)

Tacos ordered: Carne Asada, Pollo Asada and Pescado. Each offered it own unique, flavor. The Pollo Asada was my favorite, even had a small kick of spice to it. I liked it so much I ordered one to go!

The salsas and the guacamole were also impressive and delicious. The guacamole was smooth in texture, blended like, very different from anything I’d had before, and scrumptious.

The slaw, albeit small was full of flavor as well and was perhaps suppose to be topping for the tacos lol. But I love my veggies so ate it separately.

The customer service was superb. The establishment is family owned and operated. Kevin is very friendly, he’s comfortable making recommendations about the menu, showing the pride taken in what’s offered.

I was so impressed with my first visit, I had to go back to get the Chile Relleno and chips and salsa- before I left town.

They did disappoint!

The chips are thick and dusted with a seasoning. They pair well with the blended, dark red, flavorful salsa which was not spicy – which was fine.

The Chile Relleno was good, simple and what you expect traditionally. I would have probably had my blacks beans in a bowl to preserve the crisp texture of the Relleno had I know they come served on the plate. The rice was colorful, but did not live up to its vibrancy in taste. It was simple, plain, not at all what I was expecting after all the other food was bursting with flavor. The mini salad that accompanied the dish was simple but also tasty.

…And of course I had to get a Pollo Asado taco for the road.

FUN FACT! This restaurant and it’s Chille Relleno was featured on Andrew Zimmerman! (Haven’t fully verified this, just what Kevin told me!)

Highly recommend and will be back myself!

Ceviche was incredible. Mole was fantastic. Their taqueria served up phenomenal Al pastor, Carne Asada and Barbacoa tacos. Ask for the off menu Saúl Old fashioned.
