It was my first time at Coqui Restaurant and know I will become a regular. The food is fantastic, the staff are very friendly, and the restaurant is clean. I got the pernil platter with arroz con gandules and maduras as my sides. Everything was yummy! The pork was tender and moist without being greasy. The rice was was fluffy and flavorful. The maduras were sweet and perfectly cooked. The portions were perfect and it was a great price. The staff were super friendly while I waited and the food came out quickly. My to go order was packed well. I can’t believe I haven’t been to this gem until now. I highly recommend you try it out.

So, my friend told me about the Coqui Restaurant in Sanford a while ago, and I finally made it there today.

From the moment we walked in, we were greeted with such warmth and hospitality that it felt like we were visiting family. Since it was my first time, Jay (the owner) took the time to explain how the specials of the day change and vary from day to day.

We ordered the Carne Guisada and Pollo plates, and for my sides, I had arroz con gandules with maduros. To drink, we had Guava Juice and Mango Juice. Both were very refreshing and complemented the meal very well. His wife, Teresa (the Chef & co-owner), did an AMAZING job preparing the food.

We chose to sit outside, and the weather held up for us as it was already raining in a different part of town.

If you are passing through the Sanford/Lake Mary area and in the mood for Puerto Rico cuisine, then Coqui is definitely worth the stop. The service was excellent and the food was very flavorful. So if you have the opportunity to visit…¡Buen provecho!

My husband and I visited the restaurant for the first because he was craving for a shrimp soup. It is a small restaurant in a modern, new building . The restaurant is cute and clean but it was lacking wall decor. We were immediately welcomed by the owner who was very cordial and nice. We ordered Parcha juice and my hubby had a Puerto Rican beer. As appetizers we had alcapurrias one of each flavor and they were absolutely delicious ! My husband ordered his soup that came with tostones. It was plenty! He said that it was the best he has ever tasted. I had the mofongo with pollo à la plancha. Outstanding! My only other critique is that they serve the food in the styrofoam boxes and plastic utensils, however, the instant that you taste the food…you don’t care anymore! We will definitely return!! Thank you for serving authentic Puerto Rican, delicious food!!

The customer service is absolutely AMAZING here at Coqui. We were explained the whole menu with detail and patience. The food was next level! Highly highly HIGHLY recommend this restaurant to anyone that is craving Puerto Rican food. I would give 10 stars if I could. Also keep in mind, they have specials that are constantly changing so you can always try something new.

Authentic Flavors and Pristine Presentation at Coqui
Coqui Restaurant is a true gem in Sanford, offering a vibrant taste of Puerto Rico that is well worth the drive. I’m giving it a strong four stars, mainly for the execution and quality of their signature dishes.
The appetizers alone could earn them a top rating. The Empanadas arrive perfectly golden and flaky, each filling (the beef is highly recommended) seasoned beautifully. Similarly, the Alcapurrias are a masterclass in fried street food; the ground green plantain masa is consistently crisp on the outside and moist within, cradling the flavorful meat filling—a beautiful, rustic presentation.
For the main event, the Mofongos are exceptional. Albeit served in to-go styrofoam boxes, they are visually stunning, often packed neatly into a traditional pilón shape, and the taste is robust, hitting all the right notes of garlic and crispy chicharrón (pork rind). It’s evident the chefs take pride not just in flavor, but in ensuring every plate is clean, colorful, and appetizing.
On the logistical side, the location in the Minnie shopping center is extremely convenient, with ease of parking being a definite plus. We also appreciated having the option to enjoy our meal in their outdoor seating area, a nice touch for a pleasant Florida evening. Just be sure to plan your visit accordingly: please note that Coqui is closed on Sundays, which is the only minor drawback to planning a weekend feast!

I have had quite a few items off the menu and they cook really well here. I mainly go for the items that I dont make frequently at home like the mofongo and the alcapurrias. You rarely find a place that makes alcapurrias de jueyes and they have them here pretty consistently. But Ive also had their sandwiches and platters. Ill say this, I recently went to PR and, maybe I didnt go to the right places, but I struggled to find anything that cooked better than this place. I’ve also catered from them and their prices are reasonable and food is tasty. They do make everything to order for the most part so it can take a bit to get the food but its worth the wait. The gentleman that takes the orders is extremely friendly and provides great service. I highly recommend this place.

I heard about this local Puerto Rican place and thought I would give it a try. I ordered the Cubano sandwich and it was authentic and delicious! I talked with the owner Jay and he was very nice and explained the entire menu. He said that Mofongo is their specialty. I will definitely be back to try that! 10/10

I also love that it’s a local business and not a chain. There’s too many chains around here monopolizing the food industry and that serve crappy fast food.
