No one else serves a spicy lobster roll like this, with tomatillo salsa and spicy mayonnaise mixed in with a generous serving of lobster meat on a butter toasted bun. Barking Claw’s rolls are extremely affordable compared to most of the overpriced and forgettable lobster rolls you’ll find elsewhere in the region, and, like an authentic cape lunch spot, they offer Cape Cod Potato Chips as an add-on.
My family are diehard fans of Barking Claw, typically buying one of the first lobster rolls of the season and we’re some of the last customers before the cold weather arrives.
So we were delighted when Tom accepted our proposal to cater our rehearsal dinner in my parents’ backyard in August. He set up in our driveway and he and his staff served our 50 guests all the spicy and regular lobster rolls they could handle, in addition to stuffed quahogs (a New England favorite) and a delicious selection of salads and side dishes we worked on together to come up with. He even found a way to include the previously retired salmon-bacon BLT sandwiches on the menu.
Barking Claw has become a Cape Cod staple, so go see what all the hype is about!
The only downside is the stall sit next to a dusty gravel road. Every time a car drives in or out, you get extra dusting on whatever. Also the price is about the same as in Provincetown and other tourist heavy towns.
This is more like a stand that you would find at a festival. I knocked a star off for the setting. I’ve come across a lot of these food stands all over the US, and they try the make the best of their low budget location and try to make a cute outdoor seating experience. They have one picnic bench, and the some more seating at this random building right by with rusty chairs. Some folks like us traveled an hour from another place on the cape to try this roll, us Chatham. We aren’t taking it home, and had to eat it there. Wasn’t any effort made to have outdoor seating. No table settings, lights, streamers nothing. Just one park bench.
The roll itself is good, not the best but good and creative. It isn’t spicy at all, more like a ketchup mayo on top. The celery dressing, gave it a nice crunch. The lobster is pre-measured in saran wrap. I get that for controlling your cost, it’s just a cheap look to watch. Just have a scale and measure there.
We got the roll pretty quickly as there wasn’t much of a line on a Saturday in July at 11:30. I appreciated the creativity. I think this place could be 5 star with some tweaks on the roll and the setting. I think they could even add some more unique rolls. I want to give it a 3, but I just can’t with it being a small business. I think they are on to something that people want a unique approach to a lobster roll. Worth a try, but I wouldn’t stress it at its current state.
For COVID precautions, everyone had gloves and masks on and there was hand sanitizer.
They had a spicy lobster roll which was basically a regular roll topped with a spicy sauce which if I had to guess was mayo, a chill sauce mixed with some celery / pepper / slaw combo. It was tasty.
