William Krekel started the Krekel brand in 1953 on Eldorado Street in Decatur, Illinois. There are now seven Krekel’s locations throughout Central, Illinois, and we are proud to be a part of that tradition. The Springfield Krekel’s location opened in 1993. Krekel Burgers are made to order with fresh, never frozen ground beef, seared thin and served on a toasted bun. Krekel Burgers are amazingly thin – almost crunchy – with just enough grease to add flavor and remind you that they’re prepared the old-fashioned way: on a sizzling hot grill. The fries are hot and crispy and the many flavors of ice cream come in milkshakes, sundaes, concretes, or simple cones or cups. All of our food is made to order and well worth the short wait!

Amazing old fashioned burger joint…the best in Springfield! I always stop when I’m visiting. Burgers are smashed thin and cooked until edges are a little crispy which gives it a delectable flavor! (get the double, you won’t regret it). Shakes are really good too…they even have raspberry shakes! It’s that perfect nostalgic burger and shake joint!

I’m a big nostalgia guy. This is a great counter service greasy spoon. Crispy juicy burger fresh off the griddle to order. The Elvis (peanut butter cup and banana) shake was great.

What can I say, this is a great restaurant with amazing food. I ordered the breaded chicken sandwich and hot fudge brownie treat. Sandwich was great and so was the fudge brownie. Chocolate shake was very tasty. Go for a small because their large is well very large. I really suggest to try the banana split. It was so tasty. Next time I’m going try the floats.

Krekles, a Decatur original. Same great food and service. Just be known…if you ask for “everything” you get ketchup, mustard, mayo, onions, pickle, lettuce and tomato. At the Decatur stores everything is just ketchup, mustard, pickles n onions. I still enjoyed the burger. Was a nice change of pace. Building was clean as was the restrooms!

I have been to many ice cream shacks/burger and let me tell you…
This may have been one of the best burgers I have ever had. It easily places Top 5 for me. Maybe even Top 3! I grabbed a simple burger with the usual toppings and it was amazing. They are thin patties a la Steak N Shake, but they taste 100x better. For $2 for a simple burger… you really can do no better.
I grabbed a small strawberry ice cream and that was pretty great, too! But why not a perfect 5? Well, the cashier was great at taking the order, but the professionalism of the staff behind the counter was a bit immature. Maybe I am just getting old….
They also have quite a few Decatur locations, one in Pawnee, and one in Mt. Zion you can also visit, if you are never in Springfield, IL.

Our family of 6 came in to eat. The food was amazing but there was a little bit of wait, they were busy. My kids loved the milk shakes. The only thing wrong was the bathroom needed wiped down, other than that we had a great experience.

This little place rocks. It was slow but consistent with customers coming in and leaving just enough to keep the inside seating area about a quarter full. I ordered a double cheeseburger, onion rings, and LG butterfinger concrete ice cream. The food was great. The history of the business is reason enough for a stop in. The final price was a little high for this style of place at $17.

I love Krekels. I have since I was a little girl. Their hamburgers are smash burgers. Thin with crispy edges and a soft middle. The staff is friendly and the store clean. I could require nothing more from an old school burger joint!

Ordered choc.ice cream with raspberry and marshmallow toppings. Received vanilla with the 2 toppings in large,so I took it back and she said she made a mistake and gave me corrected one which was smaller in size. It was great tho.
