When we have an occasion for a very nice meal, a quiet -peaceful atmosphere with superb polite service, Tropical is our go-to. We always order the famous lettuce wrap for an appetizer which my wife says is the best she’s ever tried. I agree.
This time we tried the “Corn Cakes” too since there we 4 of us. Think of their corn cakes as really tasty- and I mean really tasty corn nuggets that are a larger and flatter across the surface made with herbs and very small green beans- so small you really can’t recognize them. They provide 4 of them and a sauce in a small cup to pour over them if you want a really tasty peanut sauce to flavor them. Our friends were shocked at how tasty each one was. With only 4, we just cut a few in half and they still satisfied. Oh, and they have a lunch special 7 days a week so if you go on a weekend and want a very nice lunch, you can have it. They have little gardens all around the restaurant where they grow their own spices and vegetables which is a nice touch. My wife always order the Pad Thai, I order the Pad See something (not sure the name). Pictured is one other dish from my friend, but everything was very tasty. So if its just a nice business lunch, a quiet special occasion, or you just want a nice place to go for Thai food- this is it. I don’t know what it is about the dining area, but it is more quiet than most restaurants in Tulsa, something we like on certain occasions. This is on my must-visit list if you come to Tulsa too. You will not regret it.
I spent 30 minutes reviewing The Tropical’s menu on line before we go, and I know what I am having. We sit down in the restaurant. I look at the menu, my thoughts get blurry (the pressure is on now on for real) and the descriptions of the meals are enticing. So, what do I do ….pick something different, just because it sounds so good and I have no idea what it is.
The meals and the delightful friendly service at The Tropical have always been exceptional. The atmosphere is both professional and relaxing. It is a restaurant where you could have a business lunch or relaxing dinner with your wife. The staff is very friendly, polite and helpful. It is just a nice, cozy, relaxing place. We have never been disappointed.
The food is outstandingly fresh and flavorful. My wife is a fan of Tofu. So, her choice was the Stir Fried Vegetables with Tofu. She says their preparation of Tofu is some of the best she has had (not soggy and fried perfectly). I had the Kaprao Fried Rice with chicken. It is fried rice with red and green bell peppers, onions, fresh basil (basil, that’s why I ordered it) and their “Special Kaprao Sauce” whatever that is? It was a very good meal. We tried the Goong Hom Pah appetizer. It is marinated shrimp rolled in thin wonton wrappers and then deep fried. A crunchy tasty appetizer, especially with their hot sauce!
Service swings between laid‑back and laser‑attentive, but staff stay friendly, know the menu, and check in enough that you feel looked after without being hovered over. Food comes out hot, generously portioned, and boldly seasoned, with spice levels (be careful) that actually mean something and dishes that taste cooked to order, not unpacked from a freezer.
Atmosphere was great. Place was clean with Thai music playing in the background and had a great inviting vibe. Service was only thing that was average. I stood for a while waiting to be seated and finally took myself to the bar area for quicker service. It wasn’t quicker as the server/ bartender took 3 to 5 minutes to come and get my order. She then disappeared . Food was delivered by someone else . I was half way through my food before I saw her again at the computer. I had to waive her down and ask for a refill since I was empty since my meal got there and mouth was on fire haha. Again she disappeared and someone else came up and took my bowl and brought my check. So no small talk and no attempt to pay attention to me.
