Reviews
It has a really good quality coffee on offer.
The weekend we attended it was the Newcastle food weekend, so we tried the special menu that was created for this weekend.
The quality of the food was good, as usual, with great welcoming staff who always offer assistance.
Unassuming semi-basement premises at the foot of the Tyne Bridge, this isn’t a big restaurant in terms of size, but it certainly punches above it’s weight when it comes to the range and quality of its food.
Visited most recently on a Tuesday evening, seated without a reservation, which was good – service was quick and efficient. This place always seems to be popular though, so you’d do well to book if you’ve a larger party.
The menu here has a wide range of pizza, pasta and some specials – I usually always have the calzone, which you can have served with a gravy boat full of bolognaise sauce, Love it.
This time though, I fancied a change and so I opted for the ‘Dirty Parmo’ a variation of the local delicacy – this is a chicken schnitzel, covered in pulled pork, cheese and a peppercorn sauce. Wow, really good. Served with a bowl of chips.
I wasn’t going to have a starter, but I was persuaded, so I had the pâté, which has an excellent bread to pâté ratio – rare. Special mention also for the black pudding stack.
The beer was Moretti, as you’d expect. Moretti for the people.
I did not have a pudding, for I was full. I remember the profiteroles were good though.
Highly recommended for a visit. A firm two paws up – a local legend, as they say.
Convenient for the Red House pub, opposite, for post-dinner drinks.
My husband wasn’t impressed with the lasagne. He felt like it had been reheated in the microwave rather than freshly made, and it lacked the bubbling cheese and freshness you’d expect.
Overall, a mixed experience, but I’d definitely have the chicken Kiev again.
Warm friendly atmosphere. Great service. Delicious food. Garlic mushrooms, Fantastic batter on the calamari. Best Carbonara I’ve ever had. Really generous portions. Next time we are in Newcastle – it’s a must.
Highly recommended.
Food – mussels, arancini and breads to start. Mussels were the best with a rich sauce nicely seasoned. Arancini was good (3 different flavours) however 2 of them were a little dry.
Surf and turf was nicely cooked, and the meat was good quality. Pizza was ok – base was a little doughy for me and the balsamic glaze overpowered all other flavours in the pizza. Kids carbonara was good, margarita pizza was once again a bit doughy. Side of fries were not worth it, undercooked and floppy.
All dishes presented well.
Service – service was friendly and drinks were delivered quickly. Despite being busy, there was not a long wait for food. Did forget a side salad and also a steak knife, but minor points.
Atmosphere – nice surroundings and decor. Bustling restaurant but not so noisy you could hold a conversation.
In conclusion, nice restaurant, good price point, but have had better Italian meals.
We had a wonderful warm welcome despite not booking in advance. The menu was fantastic and had lots of options, and it was very reasonably priced! Our server was super helpful in explaining options and giving us space to order.
When the food arrived (promptly!) it was delicious, the portions were perfect and everything tasted fresh and flavourful. For dessert we had homemade tiramisu and it was frankly the best I’ve had in years.
Highly recommend
Amazing find. A beautiful reasonably priced bottle of red and the most amazingly tender yet crispy black pudding. Paired with belly pork and peppercorn sauce.
Extremely highly recommended, so much so we are coming back next time we are in Newcastle.
