We have loved On the Border for over a decade. Go-to favorites that you know what you’re getting. Really, this is (was) the only choice for Tex-Mex left in this town. (We have a lot of Mexican restaurants but not a lot of Tex-Mex, and virtually no other Mexican chains.) The menu completely changed as of mid-November 2025, after Pappasito’s bought the restaurant chain. We were highly disappointed. Every single thing we would normally order was a complete overhaul. And not for the better! The rice is mushy and heavy with Mexican oregano. Salsa is warm amd watery, and cilantro-forward. (Chips were different, but lighter and crispier. They were good.) Southwest chicken tacos are a complete joke, the only thing similar to the original are the tortillas. Just take them off the menu completely! Don’t disguise some new crappy taco as the original! Very disappointed.

*Service was just as great as we were used to. And I understand the local management can’t control corporate decisions. But it’s still a disappointment. Just want to make it known that this isn’t what we’ve come to expect.

I decided to take the family out to try something new and everyone was craving Mexican food, so we chose On The Border Mexican Grill & Cantina. When we arrived around 4 p.m. on a Friday, we were greeted promptly and seated right away, which was a great start. Unfortunately, that’s where the positive momentum paused.
We were seated in a booth right next to the kitchen exit, so there was constant staff traffic going in and out. Despite that, we sat for about 10 minutes without being acknowledged. The hostess was kind enough to bring us chips and salsa, which we appreciated. After another few minutes, I asked a passing server to check on who had our table. When no one came, my wife eventually got up to speak with the hostess again. At around the 20-minute mark, I let another employee know that if we didn’t get drinks or place our order soon, we would be leaving.
Shortly after, a server came over and apologized, explaining that the assigned server for that section hadn’t arrived yet. That was frustrating—especially since we had already been seated there.
Once we were finally taken care of, things improved. The food was excellent, especially the steak fajitas, which were absolutely delicious and the highlight of the meal. Service became better once we had someone assigned, and we were able to enjoy the rest of our dinner. Overall, it was a mixed experience. The food may bring us back… maybe.

If something isn’t broken don’t try to fix it. This is by far the nastiest salsa I have ever had don’t change the recipes on something that works. The queso was also changed and now it has no flavor. We paid for our drinks and left. Very sad, we won’t be coming back.

So, we order two gallon margaritas and a fajita family meal (it’s that type of Friday lol). Kayleigh was super sweet, attentive — a five star employee. While the to go margaritas are definitely worth the $ (highly recommend for all) I must say that we were disappointed to learned the fajitas doesn’t come with the peppers & just onions. Mind you , the difference between a fajita and tacos are the peppers lol. So I call the restaurant to voice my concern, mentioning that the fajita meal didn’t even offer a choice to add the peppers that they discontinued in the last few months. We spent nearly $200 for the whole transaction. Kayleigh handled it with the upmost customer service and got our problem resolved to our satisfaction. This is the type of service expected from restaurants and employees. As a returning customer I am happy. Kayleigh deserves a raise. Thank you!

Unfortunately, after new ownership has decided to change the entire menu, the food is terrible. I understand they are trying to go to a cleaner menu with less ingredients, and I can respect healthier food choices. But, that’s not why I go out to eat. They have lost my business until the food goes back to the way it was, and that’s also the opinion of many I’ve talked to. As a local business owner myself, who says let’s take a successful franchise and change the one thing you’re known for?

We’ve been going here for 15 years as it (was) our favorite Mexican place in town. It’s under new ownership. Salsa is warm and roasted but way more watery and not nearly as flavorful as before. Chips were nice and crispy but over salted. Margarita wasnt as good as before either. The southwest chicken tacos are so different they don’t deserve to bear the same name. No more crispy onions, wet sautéed ones instead. Chicken wasnt as good either. If your going to change the menu items, change the names as well. Doing otherwise just invites disappointment. I get it OTB went bankrupt and yall are trying to fix it and be profitable but doing it this way ain’t it. Anyone else know of a good Mexican place in town?

5 stars because giving it 4 would be unfair.
Service is excellent, fast, caring and constantly checking on you.

The atmosphere is good, nothing crazy but just mainly comfortable and clean.

I feel like it doesn’t quite land on that tex-mex personality, as it doesn’t feel like neither decoration wise, yet the food does lean a lot more into the mex side with lots of fantastic options.

The queso and chips is absolutely amazing, incredibly flavorful with the right amount of spice.

Drinks wise i’m not sure but i’ve heard some friends say the margaritas are pretty good.

My main criticism was with my food.
The Al Carbon Steak Tacos (16.99 for three) are delicious, with good portions and great taste and seasoning on that steak, yet, the side of refried beans and rice is okay, pretty flavorless in my opinion.
I’m not saying inedible, just not worth that pricetag considering it makes for half of the plate. Actually surprising considering the quality of the other food i had was pretty fantastic.
The Guacamole was great! But don’t put guacamole straight on the hot plate! It tastes weird when its hot haha.

Maybe i was out of luck for those sides, but i don’t feel like it should take a whole star off to an otherwise great experience.

8/10

Also, shoutout to Melissa, great service, give her a raise idk.

We go here pretty often with people visiting town, or for a meal with friends. The food is great, the chips and salsa are delicious, and the prices are pretty reasonable. However, service varies depending on who you get, and some of the seating feels pretty close to one another, so it can feel a little crowded. This is especially true at some of the taller tables. It can get busy during peak times, and any time our food order has had an issue, the managers are always quick to fix and/or offer credit or a future meal. As a vegetarian, there are lots of options!

Every time we come to On The Border, Melissa is absolutely amazing! She’s hands-down the best server we’ve ever had. She always goes above and beyond to make our visit special, and she’s built such a sweet relationship with my son — he gets so excited when he sees her! They even have fun nicknames for one another. It’s clear she truly cares about her customers and loves what she does. Thank you, Melissa, for always making our family feel welcome and for turning a meal into a great experience every time!
