And honestly… if you haven’t been here yet and a sushi lover you are definately missing OUT!
Let’s get the rules straight first (because details matter and people always get this wrong):
Weekend: Happy hour runs ALL DAY LONG.
Weekday: Happy hour is 3 PM – 7 PM.
Reverse happy hour: 9 PM until they close.
This schedule alone already puts Aka Sushi House in a completely different league.
Now let’s talk about what really makes this place dangerous (in the best way):
the price, the portion size, and the freshness and one of their own specialties.
When you look at their happy-hour sushi prices and then look at the actual size of the rolls of nigiri you get, it is honestly one of the best deals in Houston — hands down. That’s exactly why this place is always packed. And no, it’s not because it’s trendy — it’s packed because the ingredients are consistently fresh.
We came in with a party today, so we ordered a whole bunch of their more special items — the kind of dishes most people don’t even think to try.
Smoked Hamachi — Aka Sushi House’s hidden killer. This is easily one of the most impressive items on the menu. Their smoked hamachi is truly one of a kind. They cure it themselves, and you can order it as sushi or sashimi. Hamachi is already soft and buttery, but once it’s lightly smoked, it becomes so smooth and silky that it honestly feels like fatty tuna. It literally melts in your mouth. A lot of people come here only for rolls and totally miss this. Big mistake.
Eggplant tempura — first time trying it and… oh my God. already knew their fried items are amazing, but this one shocked me. The outside is so crispy you can actually hear the crunch when you bite into it, and the inside is perfectly soft and silky. Not raw, not chewy, not heavy — just smooth and clean. If you have never tried eggplant tempura before, this is a must-try.
Aka tofu — creative and surprisingly addictive
This reminds me a little of kata-style tofu, but Aka Sushi House clearly added their own creativity. The fried onions and green onions on top are a huge surprise. Even if you usually don’t like onions, you will barely notice them here — you mainly taste the crispy texture, the sauce, and the tempura flavor. If you love tofu, you absolutely need to try this.
Ama Ebi — and yes, their sweet shrimp is humongous. I honestly feel like Aka Sushi House uses one of the biggest sweet shrimp I’ve ever seen. Just look at the tail — it is seriously humongous. They take their time to fry the shrimp head properly, and once you start eating it, you’ll immediately understand why this dish is so fun. There is so much roe inside the fried head that it doesn’t even feel like a small appetizer anymore. It literally kept me entertained for almost 20 minutes while chatting with my friend. No matter what age you are, this is one of those dishes everyone enjoys.
Salmon skin hand roll — sushi lovers, don’t act brand new. If you have never tried a salmon skin hand roll before, you are missing out big time. Crispy, savory, and extremely satisfying. It’s one of my personal favorites here.
Spicy chopped scallop sushi — dangerously addictive, If you love chopped scallop, make sure you order their spicy chopped scallop sushi. It is truly addictive.
And let’s be honest — the real secret weapon of Aka Sushi House is their frying skills.
Anything that comes out of their fryer is basically safe to order. If you love tempura or crispy dishes, you can literally order with your eyes closed here and nothing will fail you.
With the price you’re paying, you’re getting real freshness, creativity, unique items, and dishes you honestly don’t see everywhere else. Aka Sushi House is absolutely worth exploring, and I will definitely be back very soon.

Aka Sushi strikes a perfect balance between quality and price. The food is top-notch, and the prices are very fair, making it an ideal spot for anyone wanting to enjoy high-quality sushi without breaking the bank .
During our visit, we tried the happy hour menu, and it was fantastic. We started with edamames, which were perfectly cooked and lightly salted—a great way to kick off the meal. The shrimp avocado roll was next, offering a creamy, fresh flavor that was absolutely delightful .
The tuna sampler was incredibly fresh and flavorful, melting in your mouth with each bite. While the vegetable tempura was a tad oily, it was still tasty. The shrimp tempura, however, was spot on—crispy and cooked to perfection .
The real standout of the evening was the firecracker shrimp. This dish is a must-try! The combination of spice, crunch, and flavor made it unforgettable . For the kids, we ordered rice, which was simple yet well-prepared and perfect for their tastes.
One dish that missed the mark was the tempura banana. It was overly fried and didn’t quite hit the sweet spot for us .
The only downside was the service, which was a bit slow ️. However, given the fair pricing and the excellent quality of the food, this is a minor inconvenience.
Overall, Aka Sushi is a fantastic spot in Houston for sushi lovers. The excellent food quality and reasonable prices make it a place worth visiting. Just bring a bit of patience for the service, and you’ll have a great dining experience .
I enjoyed the veggie bento and my husband ordered the sushi special. They both came with miso soup and a super fresh side salad.
The servers here are very attentive.
