Darjeeling Express

Social Profile:

The food is a true homage to our founder Asma’s royal Mughlai ancestry and the busy streets of Calcutta, where she grew up. Food here is served the way Indian food is meant to be eaten – platters of dishes boasting texture and flavours which complement each other, encouraging you to gather and share in the style of the traditional ‘daawat’ (feast).

Acclaimed, family-owned eatery offering an array of refined Indian dishes in a cheerful atmosphere.

Came here for a birthday celebration dinner and had a great dining experience here. The food was delicious! Everything we tried was wonderful with authentic flavours, and I enjoyed the chance to have a taste of a wide range of smaller dishes. They all came together wonderfully.

The restaurant is located on the upper floor of Kingly Court, and the ambience was lovely. Service was excellent too. Thanks for a wonderful evening!

Had a wonderful meal here. All of the dishes were good, many were excellent. I would thoroughly recommend the chicken methi curry, the aloo paratha and the mango lassi drink. With the mains they serve an apricot, prune and tomato chutney which is absolutely delicious. We asked if they sell it, they said no but they gave me a little tub to take home with me for free which was a very kind gesture.

Service was excellent all around, and the interior is decorated very nicely. The music was played at the perfect level- some nice ambient sound whilst still allowing for easy conversation.

Beautiful restaurant, Amazing service and authentic delicious cuisines. Tried pani puri, fish chop and tasty momos in the start. Followed by Alu Parantha, Chicken, prawn and lamb dishes- each to relish. Finishing off in style with Gazar Halwa, Shrikhand and Masala Chai.

We had a lovely dinner in this place. It was one of our first contact with (british-)indian cuisine and we loved all the flavours. We ordered two starters and two mains for two, which happened to be a bit much thanks to the two side rice, and the flatbread we ordered extra. The mutton-dish was really filling, and the paneer was perfectly seasoned.
As the food was exceptional we wouldn’t hesitate to return any time.

Wow…this place is amazing, have been wanting to try it for ages and finally got around to it. Fantastic flavours in everything we tried but the Puchkas are worth a special mention, as they were MINDBLOWINGLY GOOD – little shells with some potato and chickpeas inside and then you pour some tamarind water in the whole in the top and pop it in your mouth white. BOOM: one of the most delicious things I have ever tasted! I will definitely be back.

Food was good, not great and something you crave for. Chutnies were good with complex flavours, along with shrimp dish and desserts. Beef was a little too sweet for my taste, and daal was the most underwhelming dish. It was bland both in terms of taste and presentation. Respect for Chef khan and her story truly is inspiring, but at the end it’s all about food. People visiting high end Desi restaurants expect bold flavours like gymkhana and dishoom, but didn’t get any of that here. Service overall was good and place is cozy and well maintained. Good to experience once but food isn’t special enough to come back

Amazing and authentic dishes, loved the ambience and worth the hype.
My favourites are the Fish Chop, Puchka, Momo, Kosha Mangsho, Aloo Paratha, Gajar Ka Halwa and the Kadak Chai.

Literally all the dishes were prepared with utmost care and perfection.
Would definitely come back soon.

I had high expectations, as London’s hospitality scene is generally excellent. Given that this restaurant is on the more expensive side and has been featured on Chef’s Table, I expected a higher overall standard.

Some of the dishes were truly spectacular and delicious, and you could clearly feel the effort and creativity coming from the kitchen. Unfortunately, not everything worked for me. The main course was far too salty to eat. I mentioned this to the waiter, but no alternative or compensation was offered.

We were seated at a table right next to the entrance door, which was open most of the time. It was very cold and uncomfortable throughout the evening. Additionally, we were sitting on a bench without cushions, which made the experience even less pleasant. When we asked for a pillow or a blanket, we were told that none were available.

The service was friendly, but rather basic and not at the level I would expect from a restaurant of this reputation and price range.

Despite some excellent food, the overall experience did not meet expectations, and unfortunately I would not return

A must try!!
Incredible food, lots of spices and absolutely scrumptious. The staff was gracious and really recommended good food.
Keema toastie, ma chingri (prawns), chaiiiii, chicken momos and the rose and cardamom soda are some of the best dishes I tried, and probably something I would recommend. What I really loved bout the food was it had not toned down the heat and spice that Indian food is rich in, something I’ve noticed in most Indian restaurants in London.

P.s keema toastie for the win 🙂

Disappointing experience — not worth the hype

Went here on Pujo weekend after having already tried Chourangi, and honestly, I was underwhelmed after looking forward to it for so long. The menu isn’t entirely Bengali — why are there so many toastie options? The kosha mangsho was under-seasoned and had an odd stench. The prawn malaikari was decent but nothing special. The parathas felt amateur — Bengalis make far better ones at home.

The most disappointing dish was the papri chaat: only five papris with minimal toppings and what tasted like store-bought tamarind chutney. It looked sad and tasted worse — the least wholesome version of papri chaat I’ve ever had. The bhapa doi portion was also tiny, lacking the richness and generosity the dish deserves.

Overall, the menu missed key Bengali classics, and the whole experience lacked authenticity — especially after all the storytelling and media coverage. The back of the menu claims to serve food that “touches your soul,” but unfortunately, they broke that promise. I’d pick Chourangi over this any day.

As a proud Bengali, it’s disheartening to see our food misrepresented in taste, texture, and abundance. Our mothers work too hard in their kitchens for there to be a world where people pay this much for such mediocre Bengali food.
