Jun I: The Premier Destination for Sushi Lovers in Montreal
Reviews
I started with two orders of uni as an appetizer. It was incredibly fresh and buttery, with a clean, rich flavor that really stood out. For my main, I ordered the gindara. The portion was smaller than I expected, but the taste absolutely delivered — deeply savory, perfectly cooked, and very satisfying. The uni was so good that I ended up ordering another round even after my main.
For dessert, I had the banane hojicha, which was a great finish to the meal. The server was extremely kind and thoughtful — he added a candle to my dessert and even poured me a complimentary glass of umeshu. Unfortunately I was already very full by then, but it was delicious and a really nice touch.
Overall, excellent food, warm service, and a great special-occasion spot. I’d definitely return.
The sushi quality is excellent, with fresh, tasty, and fatty cuts of fish—definitely among the better sushi spots in Montreal. My personal highlight was the curry sushi, which stood out as particularly delicious.
However, service was friendly but slow and somewhat disorganized. Our group of six ended up staying for almost three hours, partly due to long wait times between courses. Some dishes arrived unevenly, leaving some of us without food for extended periods.
Desserts were enjoyable, but nothing exceptional.
One notable issue was the soy sauce, which our entire group found overly salty and concentrated. It detracted somewhat from the sushi’s delicate flavors.
Despite these points, Jun I is still a solid choice for a high-end sushi dinner with friends, just adjust your expectations accordingly.
We were told the omakase included 15 pieces of sushi each, but what arrived was a shared platter with two of each piece and one roll of five, which doesn’t even divide evenly for two people.
For the price, the portions and overall taste were disappointing. Dessert was a single, tiny tart. I can’t speak to the rest of the menu, but I would’ve maybe preferred to stick to the à la carte menu. We spent $400 for omakase for 2, one of the cheapest bottle of wine and tip.
The salle à manger section is calm and quiet making it the perfect ambiance for a date night.
The alcohol menu offers a wide selection of wine, saké, beers ans cocktails.
However, the portion was quite small, and even after adding some à la carte sushi (like a crab one that sadly missed the mark), we left still feeling hungry and ended up grabbing more food afterward. For the price, we expected not only high quality (which was just decent) but also a more satisfying experience overall. If you order the Omakase along with à la carte sushi, I think you might leave satisfied.
The service and ambiance were okay.
