The food was very tasty. I was a bit afraid reading the low reviews, but realised the tourists did not understand the concept. This is a specific type of personnel leaf wrap sushi, the fish is cured so not fresh and thinly sliced. Please don’t eat the leaves, like I’ve just seen one guy doing it. The set menu was well balanced and tasty. The service was fast and friendly. They did their best with limited English, but we understood each other easily. Overall a local experience I’m happy I’ve tried. Truly recommended!

We wanted to try Nara’s specialty, persimmon leaf-wrapped sushi, so here we were.

We ordered the leaf sushi set, unagi don set, and cold soba with sushi set. The unagi don was decent. The persimmon leaf sushi was okay, with nicely seasoned rice, but the mackerel one was a bit too fishy for our taste. I did not know what to expect, but the set only had two types of fish, and they are thin.

The restaurant located at second floor and it’s very hot and stuffy during our visit in mid July. Later we realised the restaurant we had in mind was actually next door, though they are both related.

Overall it left me with the impression that I would not want to try persimmon leaf sushi again.

Hidden gem off the main roads. I was met by the most fantastic lady. She definitely had the friendly aura that others speak of. The entire chef staff was also friendly. They came out to say hi, but did not hover. I was offered tea, then chose the local speciality sushi. Tasted fantastic. Keep it simple so the flavors come out.

Definitely a must try.

Arrived right when they opened and did not need to wait. The food was well presented, but the flavours were quite light. Should definitely try if you get a chance. The sushi wrapped in persimmon leaves were very interesting as well.

If you are looking for regular sushi this is not the place. This sushi is very different and very good specific for this area. The different style sushi has a very good taste not that moist style sushi. We had the Nara specialty tea based porridge. The dish overall was real was good would recommend.

I won’t lie and say that we found this place by accident, as I have been simply studying the map nearby my hotel looking for somewhere to eat; to me and my father this stood out. Well, mainly to him, I won’t lie. But when we came, we were greeted with great kindness and lots of smiles, immediately served some cold tea that was surprisingly refined (it had a very complete taste, bitter only at first, kind of smokey) and with a dinner menu that had a few I interesting options. I like that there were enough for anyone to find what they like, but not too many to the point of feeling overwhelmed and indecisive.
The tofu was the most surprising dish for me (I got the Tennpyou which is kakinoba sushi, miwa some noodle, sashimi, sesame tofu, potof) as it had an insanely rich texture and taste which is unusual, I mean, I never tried anything like it so just for that five stars!
I also really liked the consistency of the rice of the sushi, and the sashimi had a delicate taste (I’m pretty sure it was tuna, but I don’t usually eat a lot of fish, so I have endless doubts about anything hahah).
I’m not sure how to describe the dessert if not “very very Japanese” it was essentially what most westeners would call a regular red bean paste mochi, but kind of turned inside out so the paste was outside and the “mochi” inside. Overall, not too sweet, just the right amount.
Before I forget, let me describe how the inside of the restaurant is:
Very traditional, everything is in wood, and we got the option to choose between the traditional Japanese table (therefore sitting in the correct position at a low table, all upon a slightly raised platform to create distance between where you leave your shoes and where you eat) and the regular table. We chose the former, which, admittedly, was wrong for us, as we are in no way capable of remaining in the correct seating position for prolonged periods of time as our feet don’t stay flat, so I must apologize to everyone who saw us sitting like a cheap interpretation of Japan made by someone who has never left their home country (not even with their mind). Sorry!!

Overall, great ambience, service, position, and most importantly food.
10/10, a must visit for visitors in Nara!

A work of art. The most impressive meal I’ve ever had. Everything was super fresh, as in the seafood was hours old or even fresher. Incredible sake and service too, the chef was so skilled and friendly.

Note, this was a private meal with a sushi chef, next door is a more regular sushi restaurant. Incredible value considering the skill and quantity of food! Sashimi and tempura.

Amazing place! The food was super tasty and light. I went around lunchtime so they had many customers but I didn’t have to wait for to long. There is an older lady who has an incredible aura and is super nice.

Small restaurant specializing in seasonal dishes and Nara specialties. There were four items available when I went (April 2023). There was a venison and boar curry (served with rice, pickles, salad, and a red bean and rice ball wrapped in persimmon leaf), a marinated tuna bowl (served with soup, pickles, chawanmushi, a mountain yam side dish, and the same dessert), a noodle dish, and something else I can’t quite remember.

We got two of each of the curry and the tuna bowl with a persimmon juice. Everything was delicious! I really enjoyed the tuna bowl and the accompaniments.

Service was very polite and prompt.
