Tried Miki Japanese on Balboa and it was a good experience. Friendly staff and efficient service along with a casual ambiance. The chirashi bowl had fresh fish with seasoned rice, nicely portioned and balanced. The salmon teriyaki and mixed tempura bento was also solid — the salmon was cooked well with a flavorful glaze, and the tempura was crisp without being oily. The bento sides rounded out the meal well. Overall, a good spot for Japanese food in the neighborhood.

I sat inside to eat a couple times a few years ago. But recently, since I live nearby, it’s easy to order online pickup for convenience. They usually give the option of picking up ASAP (20-35 mins).

I’d say the best options I’ve had were the cold soba and chicken katsu.

Cold soba: 4.5/5. I inhaled the noodles, wish there was more!
Hot soba: 4/5. Not bad, just not as good as the cold soba noodles. Tempura was good.
Chicken katsu curry: 4/5 actually ate most of it the next day, still good. Chicken can be crispier for a 5.

Chicken broth ramen: 3/5. Greasy/oily, would pass on the ramen here. It was better a few years ago.
Salmon sashimi: 3/5. Didn’t taste as fresh.

So this is somewhere I come by if I’m craving some Japanese food and don’t want to travel far. Great for locals! But I wouldn’t go out of the way for it. Also, I think if they improved their signage on the outside it could attract more business, since it’s not that clear that the building is “Miki Restaurant”

We ordered take out. Some of the best ramen in this area. It traveled well and was still warm when it arrived.

Food 4; Ambiance 3.5 (my chair felt like it was about to break); Service 4; Chirashi had some different ingredients you normally don’t get. Karage was good but at a high cost. This place has always been a neighborhood favorite and remains consistent. 2 people; $55

Small spot that’s easy to miss on Balboa. Cozy inside with friendly and fast service. Tried the tonkatsu ramen, spider roll and crab shrimp roll. The ramen was not bad. Both sushi rolls came with a lot of sauce on them, maybe teriyaki sauce, and was a little too salty for my tastes. Would try something else next time.

First time trying Miki even though I’ve lived in the area for a while. Got vegetarian ramen and assorted tempura for take out. The tempura was the best I have ever had. Everything was cooked so well with a tasty, crispy batter. And they chose good veggies too, (the broccoli was amazing). I gobbled it up. Ramen was also really good!

I used to really enjoy this restaurant, but my recent experience left me disappointed. The dishes just didn’t taste the same. The ramen, which was once a favorite, had changed, and the pork didn’t taste fresh. The katsu was soggy, and the rice was overly vinegary. The tempura was decent, but overall, the meal didn’t meet the standard I remember. Spending $80 for three people, we walked away feeling let down. I hope they can bring back the quality that once made this place special.

Very good food in a charming place.
I enjoyed all the food that was served to me from the starters to the main dishes.
Even small regular starters like the Edamame were really really good and tasty. I also loved the fried chicken starter, served with a nice mayonnaise dressing on the side. The ramen itself was also very good.
Everything was served in big portions, which we weren’t able to finish.
The service was good, as the waiters were particularly helpful with our requests to replace ingredients with others that were not on the menu.
