Very good beer and wine selection as well including a Lambrusco which is generally hard to find.
Now, if only they could get a hard alcohol license and do cocktails…
We shared the buttermilk fried chicken and Korean mixed rice. The chicken was done to perfection, moist and lightly crispy, with a sweet and spicy chutney-style sauce. On the plate was a very nice spring salad, topped with fennel and sliced nectarine. Excellent.
The Korean fried rice showed creativity and originality, while keeping an authentic flair with gochujang (I’ve been eating my Mom’s Korean food all my life). Pulled brisket was mixed with the rice to create a lightly crispy texture and meaty flavor. Pickled radishes and sprigs of cilantro added brightness to the dish.
On to the service. Bryson was very friendly and professional, making our experience all the better. He seemed genuinely personable.
Santa Cruz has a gem in this place. We can’t wait to go back and try something else, and encourage everybody to go check it out.
Listen, I have a strict policy when it comes to rating restaurants—I cap out at 6 stars out of 5 when I’m thoroughly impressed. But today? Today, I break my own rules. Tarros Mexican Restaurant & Bar isn’t just worthy of 10 stars—it demands them. If Google Maps refuses to acknowledge this, I insist we start a petition immediately.
First, Let’s Discuss the Water.
Yes, you read that right. The water deserves its own section. Smooth, room temperature. Pure. It tasted like it was hand-delivered from an untouched local mountain spring by a squad of highly trained hydration specialists. I’ve had my fair share of questionable restaurant water, so believe me when I say this was top-tier H2O in a nice glass.
Service? If NASA Ran a Restaurant, It Would Look Like This.
Two people. That’s it. Two employees running the entire place like a perfectly synchronized machine. Drinks were refilled, orders were taken, and food was served with the speed and precision of a SpaceX launch. If NASA operated this efficiently, we’d have vacation homes on Mars by now.
And Then Came the Food…
I ordered the flautas and asked Will to hold the tomatoes. Somewhere in the cosmic forces of miscommunication, this translated to “hold the cheese” instead. Was I upset? No. Did I question if I had suffered a minor stroke that altered my ability to speak English? Maybe.
But then the plate arrived. Absolutely smothered in tomatoes.
And here’s where things got complicated—I HATE tomatoes. I don’t even want their juice breathing on my food. But something about the presentation made me hesitate. It was as if the flautas were whispering, “Trust us.”
So, I took a cautious bite—no cheese, no sauce, no sour cream I even removed the tomatoes and onions. Just chicken and shell. Good. Decent. Nothing life-changing.
Then, I added the cheese. WOW!
Then, I drizzled on some sauce. Alright, now we’re really talking.
Then, I went all in with the sour cream and finally—against EVERY fiber of my being—I took a bite WITH THE TOMATOES, the Fourth of July erupted in my mouth. Grand finale. Sky-exploding. Crowd-cheering. The whole works. The flavors merged in a way that made my soul dance. For 41 years, I despised tomatoes. Today, Tarros made me a believer.
Final Verdict? A Medal-Worthy Experience.
To the Will, and the culinary wizards at Tarros—you have changed me. I walked in expecting a good meal, and I walked out a different person.
10 out of 5 stars. Someone start engraving the medals.
(NOTE the picture was taken after eating 2 out of 3 and onions removed, the original presentation was 10 stars.)
